WELCOME to Issue Six!
Greetings!
This is shaping up to be a busy year for us! We've been working hard to connect you with new media
and to hear from some of the artists and scientists working in the field. Last month, BridgeThink recorded a
podcast with Jürgen Schulze as we spent time with him learning about 3D virtual environments and how that technology is being applied to the arts, film and other disciplines. And now we're looking forward to our virtual visit with Jon Rubin live at the Waffle
Shop as we participate in a social experiment via the internet that you
have to witness for yourself.
There are some other great pieces included this month such as a new "Active Org" and an announcement for the South Coast, Massachusetts
based film production, Whaling City. Enjoy!

crazy idea that when more people connect, the more they
accomplish. So, if you have something shaking in your hometown, let us
know! All it takes is
two people to connect for an idea to
ignite.
We invite you to become a Bridge-thinker.

which explores the social dynamics of public places and
idiosyncrasies of individual and group behavior. Submit your questions now! Or even better, tune in to interact with the interview live at
www.waffleshop.org on March 20th at 9 pm eastern. Ask your questions in the chat window and Michael will put them to Jon via his "body double".

| PODCAST WITH JÜRGEN SCHULZE at the STARCAVE
|
Last month we asked you to submit your questions as we
sat down to interview 3D & Virtual Reality Scientist, Jürgen Schulze. Jürgen is a UMass Dartmouth
graduate and has been at UC San Diego's Calit2 since 2005 creating virtual
environments. Jurgen's work
breaks out of what you may think "science" typically is as
he develops new ways to connect with the world around us. You can find his research used in fields
such as the arts, cinema, and archeology to name a few. Check out our podcast and
hear Jurgen answer your question and discuss his groundbreaking work with Calit2's StarCAVE as
well as what he thinks the future of interactive art and cinema entertainment may hold
for us.

| MULTIRIO
|
This month's Active Org comes to us from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where in 2005 Leila Kaas, our Director of Social Accountability and Community Outreach helped organize a tour of the MultiRio TV studios for BridgeThink's executive director, Don Burton.
As Rio's municipal multimedia company, MultiRio's goal is to integrate media and education. Using TV, web and print, MultiRio helps viewers to understand, "decode" and use today's digital tools to democratize information and make "cultural wealth available to all citizens."
Demonstrating their integrative approach is the animation series "I Swear I Saw It" (Juro que Vi) in which students of municipal schools become partners with the professional animation team. Through dialogue and drawings students help transform traditional Brazilian Myths into narratives that re-acquaint youth with an aspect of local culture that often gets lost in global market driven entertainment.
"In the meetings we ask children to express themselves," explains Patricia Alves Dias,
Coordinator of the Center for Special Projects in Animation at MultiRio. "For example, in [the episode] The Saci there's a through line about childrens' rights. We were in doubt if the narrative made this connection clear to the children. Our contact with the group eliminated our doubts, helping us to make an animation dedicated to them." The series is now being adapted into a feature length film.
Finally, projects such as The Animated Charter for Peace encourage children to draw, animate and narrate finished stories themselves. "Peace in Jacarezinho Shanty Town," for example, provided kids living in an underprivileged community of Rio de Janeiro, with an opportunity to use images and issues from their own neighborhood. "Peace in Jacarezinho ..." took part in the Museum of Television & Radio's 2006 Media Literacy: Overseas Conversations Series (PDF) in which MultiRio was invited to New York City to share their experience. From the program:
Eight hours, a thousand drawings, thirty color pens and the right to freely express their opinions. This is just what boys and girls living at social risk need to make one manifest: The Animated Charter for Peace.
