Granot Matriarchal BlessingArchie Granot's exquisite papercutssuch as "Matriarchal Blessings," at left, have renewed and enhanced a traditional Jewish art form. Granot uses multiple layers of interlaced designs to create three-dimensional reliefs. His unique works utilize Hebrew inscriptions and Jewish imagery. Granot's inspirations are biblical, Talmudic, rabbinical and Jerusalem among others. His work includes ketubot, blessings for the home, ceremonial objects and books, including a Haggadah.

Presentation by Rabbi Emanuel Goldsmithleft, professor of Yiddish, Hebrew and Jewish studies at Queens College of the City University of New York for over 25 years. Please bring a dairy lunch. Drinks and dessert will be served. The program will begin at 12:45 pm.

·    6:45-9:00 pm - Art Studio at Rio. A laid back, fun evening at the Amazing Art Studio in the Washingtonian Center, 205 Boardwalk Place, Gaithersburg (just one block north of the Rio Movie Theater building in Gaithersburg, MD). Hosted by the Tikvat Israel Sisterhood, the event is open to women of all ages (Sisterhood membership is not required). Make a one-of-a kind piece using fused glass or mosaics, or paint a pre-made ceramic bowl, plate, or other piece. We'll hang out as a group but will pay individually for whatever we choose to make. RSVP at tieventrsvp@gmail.com or by contacting Nancy Matheson at 301-460-2069 by Sunday, May 8.

 

 

Collection for Our Troops

AmericanTroopsOn Sunday, May 15, 2011, from 9:30 am-12:30 pm the Social Action Committee is sponsoring a collection for our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.  We will be collecting a variety of items in the Libarary Annex. Stop off and drop off on your way to the ECC Extravaganza (see story at right).

 

Among the items sought: instant soups, combs, antibacterial wipes, sunscreen, hard candy, hair bands/clips, cooling bandanas, chap stick, nail clippers, Frisbees, eye drops, foot powder, nerf balls, toothbrushes tissues, beach balls (deflated), dental floss, chewing gum, nasal spray, CDs/DVDs, bar soap, trail mix, socks and Q-Tips.

 

You also may donate a check payable to the Social Action Committee to defray the high cost of mailing and to purchase additional items. Leave checks in the synagogue office by May 10. In the memo section, indicate "collection for troops."

Abby Goldman You Tube...to Abby Goldman, above, daughter of Tikvat Israel congregants Rebecca Salon and Jay P. Goldman, who is featured in a short video interview created by the U.S. Embassy in Tel Avi in conjunction with Earth Day in mid-April. The YouTube link is here. Abby talks about her research on renewable solar energy, and the video shows her in the materials engineering research lab at the Technion in Haifa, Israel, where she's spending the 2010-11 academic year on a Fulbright fellowship. A recent graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a physics major, she starts a doctoral program in materials science in September at University of California  at Santa Barbara.
