The Adult Education and Environmental committees are proud to host Evonne Marzouk, left, for a discussion entitled "Am I My Planet's Keeper?: Torah and Environmental Responsibility in a Fragile World," an overview of Jewish-environmental teachings and suggested applications on Sunday, May 1, at 10:00 at Tikvat Israel.
Ms. Marzouk is the founder and Executive Director of Canfei Nesharim, which educates and empowers Jewish individuals, organizations and communities to take an active role in protecting the environment, in order to build a more sustainable world. She also leads "Maayan Olam," a Torah-environment committee serving three synagogues in Silver Spring.

Two New Learning Opportunities at TI
|
· Talmud Study With Rabbi Gorin
The Rabbi will be teaching a Talmud class beginning Tuesday May 3, immediately after evening minyan. This class will be appropriate for those who have never studied Talmud before, but some working knowledge of Hebrew will be expected. Participants will study the first chapter of the first tractate of the Talmud - Tractate Berakhot, which deals with prayer and synagogue life. Please contact the Rabbi if you are planning to participate.
· Haftarah Trope Training With Wendy Morrison
Eight one-hour sessions on Shabbat mornings following kiddush, beginning June 11 and ending July 30, to be held in the boardroom, in the rear of the Sanctuary. To sign up, contact Wendy at klezmer@comcast.net.

Presentation by Rabbi Emanuel Goldsmith, left, professor of Yiddish, Hebrew and Jewish studies at Queens College of the City University of New York for over 25 years and a recognized authority on the writings of Mordecai M. Kaplan. Please bring a dairy lunch. Drinks and dessert will be served. The program will begin at 12:45 pm.

·6:45-9:00 pm - Art Studio at Rio. A laid back, fun evening at the Amazing Art Studio in the Washingtonian Center, 205 Boardwalk Place, Gaithersburg (just one block north of the Rio Movie Theater building in Gaithersburg, MD). Hosted by the Tikvat Israel Sisterhood, the event is open to women of all ages (Sisterhood membership is not required). Make a one-of-a kind piece using fused glass or mosaics, or paint a pre-made ceramic bowl, plate, or other piece. We'll hang out as a group but will pay individually for whatever we choose to make. Collection for Our Troops

On Sunday, May 15, 2011, from 9:30 am-12:30 pm the Social Action Committee is sponsoring a collection for our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. We will be collecting a variety of items in the Libarary Annex. Stop off and drop off on your way to the ECC Extravaganza (see story at right).
Among the items sought: instant soups, combs, antibacterial wipes, sunscreen, hard candy, hair bands/clips, cooling bandanas, chap stick, nail clippers, Frisbees, eye drops, foot powder, nerf balls, toothbrushes tissues, beach balls (deflated), dental floss, chewing gum, nasal spray, CDs/DVDs, bar soap, trail mix, socks and Q-Tips.
You also may donate a check payable to the Social Action Committee to defray the high cost of mailing and to purchase additional items. Leave checks in the synagogue office by May 10. In the memo section, indicate "collection for troops." |

Mazal Tov...

...to Molly Schneider, daughter of TI congregants Martie Adelman and Marc Schneider, who has been selected as a Szarvas Fellow for this summer. The fellowship is provided by the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation to 40 North American Jewish high school students, who travel to a Jewish international camp in Hungary which serves children from eastern European communities. Mollie will be in Europe during the last two weeks of July 2011, attending camp and touring Budapest.
