For the Second Film in Tikvat Israel's
6th Annual Israeli Film Festival
Dear Mr. Waldman (In Hebrew: Michtavim L'America) - 7:45 - 10:30 pm
In Tel Aviv in the 1960s 10-year-old Hilik knows his goal in life-to make his parents happy and compensate for the grief they both suffered in the Holocaust. The fragile equilibrium of Rivka and Moishe's new, post-war life begins to waver when Moishe convinces himself that Yankele, his son from his first marriage, didn't actually die in Auschwitz, but rather survived to become President Kennedy's assistant, the "Jack Waldman" he sees pictured in a newspaper. When a deluded Moishe writes a letter to Waldman, Hilik takes matters into his own hands.
Dear Mr. Waldman, a coming-of-age story written and directed by the son of survivors, beautifully captures the milieu of mid-century Israel and the peculiarities of growing up amid the emotional wreckage of the Holocaust. To learn more, visit the film's website.
The film is 90 minutes long and is rated R. Program following includes light refreshments and moderated discussion. Admission per person, payable at the door, is $10 for TI members and $12 for nonmembers. Reservations are not required--you may decide to attend at the last minute--but an RSVP will help the event planners. You can do so via our new "Rapid Registration" system >>HERE<< or by calling the TI Office (301-762-7338) or via email at adulted@tivkatisrael.org .
Snow Date: Saturday, January 29

CAUTION
|
Repairs to the leaky valve on the hillside outside the TI offices, which we informed the congregation about earlier this week, are underway. Unfortunately, the large patch of ice covering our two handicapped parking spaces on that side of the building remains--the result of the continuing steady trickle of water, coupled with persistent cold temperatures.
Please do park in these two spaces until the leak is repaired. In the interim, the following spaces are reserved for handicapped parking:
ˇRabbi's
ˇCantor's
ˇAdministrator's
ˇYouth Director's and the space to its left (on the exit lane)
Please feel free to straddle the parking line in any of these spaces, if necessary. The other side of the lot, along Baltimore Road, is unaffected, as is the exit lane near the Sanctuary.
We ask everyone to drive with caution through the icy part of the parking lot and to avoid walking on the ice. We will also periodically treat the ice.
We apologize for the inconvenience and we thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Fulfill a Binding Obligation
Sunday, Feb. 6,
at Tikvat Israel
|

Many of us would recognize that the Hebrew letter shin has three branches that reach up from its base. However, if you look closely at a tefillin box, you will notice that one shin has FOUR branches which reach up from its base. Why?
To learn the answer to that question and unwrap other wonders of tefillin...
Please join us at Tikvat Israel on Sunday, February 6, 2011 and participate in the World Wide Wrap.
Come and be counted as we learn, practice, and celebrate the mitzvah of tefillin with thousands of Jews around the world. We will have extra sets and educators available to review the hows and whys of tefillin. Let's make this a meaningul morning at Tikvat Israel.
Schedule:
8:30 am - Lay Tefillin with instruction
9:00 am - Daven Shacharit (morning minyan)
9:45 am - Hear from teens who made their own tefillin in a program sponsored by Rabbi Gorin
10:00 am - Nosh on light breakfast
Please contact the synagogue office to reserve a space and prepare to wrap. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email at smithjd412@hotmail.com.
