1 Shevat 5771

Learning Z'mirot: The Music Havurah is sponsoring a workshop on "Learning Z'mirot" on Sunday, January 9, 2011, at 8:00 pm in the Flax Library. Jason Schwartz will teach us some traditional and new music settings to ancient poetry sung around a Shabbat table.

"Shabbat Shira" Dinner: The Tikvat Israel Music Havurah invites you to mark "Shabbat Shira" with a Shabbat dinner followed by singing on Friday night, January 14. On "Shabbat Shira" we read in the Torah on Shabbat morning about our crossing of the Red Sea and the songs we sang in thanksgiving. We will sing some of the z'mirot we learned in the workshop. The dinner will follow the 6:30 pm Kabbalat Shabbat service. Dinner reservations can be made through the office via phone (301-762-7338) or via email to feliciarblack@msn.com (subject line: "Jan 14 Dinner"); pay in advance or ask to be billed.  The cost is $18 for adults and $8 for children 5-18.  The RSVP deadline is Monday, January 10.

Note: Both Music Havurah events are open to the congregation. The Music Havurah is open to all members of Tikvat Israel who are interested in learning more about Jewish music. It is not a performing group. To get on the Music Havurah listserve, contact Felicia Black at feliciarblack@msn.com.

Kabbalat Shabbat With Instruments: Celebrate Shabbat at Tikvat Israel Congregation with the uplifting "Kabbalat Shabbat With Instruments." This monthly Shabbat evening service includes new and traditional spirited and spiritual melodies accompanied by guitar, piano, bass and percussion. The next "KS with I" will be held on January 21 at 6:30 pm in the Flax Library. All are invited to partake of pre-service hors d'oevures with a Tu Bishvat tam sponsored by Sisterhood beginning at 5:45 pm. Future services include February 11 and March 11.

Kabbalat Shabbat Without Instruments: I would like to invite you to attend Kabbalat Shabbat even on the Fridays when there are no instruments. I lead an upbeat service with spirited and spiritual melodies as well. You don't have to wait once a month to be inspired.

Purim Shpiel Writers and Performers Needed: Our "homegrown" Purim Shpiel will be presented on Purim night, Saturday, March 19 after the Megillah Reading at 8:00 pm.  If you would like to help write it or perform in it, contact Louise Chatlynne at lgchatlynne@gmail.com. The first brainstorming session will be held at the shul on Wednesday, January 19 after minyan.

HOLD THE DATES:

From Tesfa to Tikva: A Lens on Ethiopian Israelis - March 5 & 6: Tikvat Israel is sponsoring events devoted to the understanding of Ethiopian Israelis. More TBA.

Purim Seudah - Sunday, March 20 at 4:30 pm: Since this year Purim lands on a Sunday, we have a great opportunity to get together as a community to observe the mitzvah of an afternoon Purim Seudah.

Purim Puppets Production - Sunday, March 20 at 11:15 am: Since erev Purim begins right after Shabbat, it is too late to perform our annual Purim Puppet Show so we have scheduled it for Sunday, March 20, at 11:15 am in the Social Hall. Tell your friends about our amazing life-size puppets.  If you are an adult or teen and would like to operate a puppet or participate as a character voice, please contact Karen Lipsy at bkrsl@verizon.net.  Rehearsals will be held on March 6 and March 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
