A Matter of Size (Sipur Gadol)
Saturday, January 8, 2011 7:45 - 10:30 pm*
Four overweight friends from the Israeli city of Ramle are fed up with dieting and the dieting club they belong to. When Herzl (341 lbs.), the main protagonist, loses his job as a cook and starts working as a dishwasher in a Japanese restaurant in Ramle, he discovers the world of Sumo, where large people such as himself are honored and appreciated. Through the restaurant owner Kitano (132 lbs.), a former Sumo coach in Japan, he falls in love with the sport. Herzl wants Kitano to be their coach but Kitano is reluctant--they first have to earn their spurs.
A Matter of Size is a comedy about a 'coming out' of a different kind--overweight people learning to accept themselves.
*The movie is 90 minutes long. Program following includes light refreshments and moderated discussion. Admission per person, payable at the door, is $10 for TI members and $12 for nonmembers.
Reservations are not required--you may decide to attend at the last minute--but an RSVP will help the event planners. You can do so via our new "Rapid Registration" system >>HERE<< or by calling the TI Office (301-762-7338) or via email at adulted@tivkatisrael.org .
Reviews...
...Israeli cinema is not known for its broad comedies, but that may have to change after "A Matter of Size," which is both very broad and very funny. Review by Daniel M. Kimmel The Jewish Advocate More
...Director duo Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor have fashioned a look at a group of blue-collar Israeli men (and one woman) and how they came to accept who they are. Sounds like your usual coming-out tale, no? Review by Brett Michel The Boston Phoenix More ...Fed up with dieting, four overweight friends in the Israeli city of Ramle decide to start a sumo wrestling club in genial situation comedy "A Matter of Size," from helmers Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor. Review by Alissa Simon Variety More
..."A Matter of Size" ("Sipur Gadol") happens to be one of the Israeli entries in this year's Tribeca Film Festival - but it addresses personal conflict rather than the more stereotypical geopolitical conflict. Review by Jordana Horn The Jewish Daily Forward More

Huge Jewish Book Sale a Huge Success
|
Yasher koach to Rabbi Gorin and to all of the volunteers who helped make last Sunday's Judaica Book Sale at Tikvat Israel such a huge success. Almost the entire stock of more than 2,000 gently used and like-new books on a vast range of subjects were sold to happy customers eager for bargains (and the Rabbi was careful to warn shoppers that the books on the shelves were not for sale!). Assorted pastries, fruit kabobs, and coffee added to the warmth and ruach of the event. Rabbi Gorin said that the Book Sale "put Tikvat Israel on the map," and that he has "already started acquiring books for the next sale."
