Singer Karen Rodriguez will be appearing at Jazz in Media! at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Media, PA this Wednesday, February 15th with her Latin Jazz Ensemble. From her first note, you will realize that Ms.Karen Rodriguez Rodriguez is the real deal. Others may attempt to convey a Latin sound by singing a bossa nova or a samba once in awhile, but Latin music is in Rodriguez's DNA - Her parents are from Puerto Rico and she learned from the best! Seeing and hearing Karen perform live is like walking into a Cuban nightclub circa 1950, but her Latin sound would not be complete without pianist Suzzette Ortiz, who was recently spotlighted on ABC News for her work with talented students from the Morgan Village Academy. Check out the video here! These students want to participate in a music festival in Prague and could use some help to get there. Call Nicole Bell at 856-883-4142 if you have some extra change in your pocket. ****
Denise KingAnd appearing at Jazz at the Playhouse will be singer Denise King and her band featuring pianist Aaron Graves, bassist Lee Smith and drummer Khary Shaheed at the Society Hill Playhouse, 507 S. 8th Street in Philly, this Thursday, February 16th. As most of us know by now, Denise King is a very passionate singer who has a way of pulling her audiences into her performances. She has a warm tone and her impeccable phrasing brings every song to life. Over the years, she has shared the stage with such greats as Roy Hargrove, The Brecker Brothers, Phil Wright, Cecil McBee, Christian McBride (and congrats to Christian on his Grammy last night!), Uri Caine, Sid Simmons, Billy Paul, Jean Carne, Celine Dion, Bunny Sigler and the list goes on and on. This concert will be her last in Philadelphia before she embarks on a European tour with French pianist Olivier Hutman. Their collaboration on the 2011 recording project No Tricks garnered a best jazz vocal nomination by the Academie du Jazz last year. Check out my latest profile on Denise in JazzTimes.

NewsRecently, a musician showed me the premium he was paying for his car insurance. When I saw the policy, I almost fell out of my chair. Please, check your policy. As the years go by, sometimes the insurance company tends to up the cost of your coverage. If you think you've been exploited in any way and you're over 62, contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for help.

Also, here is a great resource for our local musicians to promote themselves. Please take advantage of it! Check out this page at All About Jazz - it tells you everything the site can do for you for FREE! If you need help, contact me.

And, for a peek at what's been happening at Cheltenham this season, here's a video of the Dirk Quinn Band by Joe Harrison.
