| Lessons from Basketball |

February 2012
As I sit watching my son's basketball practice (what better place to work on newsletter ideas, right?) I realize how much business is like basketball. As with many sports, it is clearly evident how teamwork is required to be successful. We can learn a lot by watching a basketball game and seeing how the players work together and play upon the strengths of each person to get the win!

| Business is Like Basketball
Basketball is a fast and spontaneous game. Everyone works together and wins or loses as a team. Keep your eye on the ball, think quickly, and have your team working together effectively to get the win!

Shoot to Score
Take as many shots as you can. The more shots attempted, the more opportunities to score. Send out proposals, make sales calls, and keep track of your progress. Create marketing materials to advertise and develop your branding. Update your web site regularly.
ReboundsIf you miss the target, view it as an opportunity to learn and become better. Get all the rebounds and keep taking shots. Here is a quote from the great basketball player Michael Jordan, who was actually cut from his high school basketball team:
"I have failed over and over again in my life ... and that is why I succeed." - Michael Jordan
Teamwork
To score points, all players need to work together as a team. Every employee relies on and works with the strengths of his team to reach a common goal. Look for the guy who is "open" to delegate work. Have regular meetings with your team to work out strategies and game plans.
Remember, work is FUN and "it's all in how you play the game". And every now and then, you get a shot at a "Free Throw". Let it be your opportunity to shine!
