Dr. Jesse Hinrichs at MASA
Dr. Jesse Hinrichs presented the findings from his quantitative research study on Board Policy Governance to the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) Conference at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center on September 28.
MASA's fall conference draws about 500 school administrators, mainly superintendents. Board governance is a popular topic; research on governance models and best practices is of interest to many superintendents and board members.
Dr. Hinrichs works in the Graduate Teacher Licensure (GTL) program at the St. Paul site and serves as the coordinator of the St. Cloud GTL program, directing field placements and teaching courses and seminars. His interest in board governance comes from his 13 years as a school administrator and board member. He is submitting his research study for publication to appropriate journals and will seek more opportunities to present his findings at future conferences. |

Service Learning Opportunities for Spring Break 2010 & 2011!
The School of Education will be offering a service learning opportunity to Brooklyn Center schools during spring break of 2010.
This experience to the Brooklyn Center Schools, located in the north metro area, will include a 5-day, week-long placement in a classroom aligned with SOE students' licensure area (March 15-19).
Also, planning ahead for 2011 spring break, students can earn credits while in Peru for 10-12 days. This course, offered in conjunction with Nursing & Health Sciences, includes an intensive immersion experience in Peru that is hosted by the NGO ProWorld.
Students and faculty interested in these opportunities should contact Cindy Mattson, SOE Admin. Asst ( [email protected] or 218-723-6108). |
Mathew Sanford: December 1,
Mitchell Auditorium, 7pm
Matthew's story makes him an incredibly compelling speaker. At age thirteen, Matthew's world turned upside-down when a devastating car accident killed his father and sister and left him paralyzed from the chest down.
Advice from his doctors to "forget his lower body," however, was what really crippled him. It also began his amazing and inspiring journey of waking mind and body. "I did not overcome my disability," Matthew says, "I transformed my life." Thirty years later, Matthew is:
- The award-winning author of Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence.
- A nationally recognized yoga teacher.
- Founder of the groundbreaking nonprofit Mind Body Solutions.
- A leading voice in the integrative health movement.
- Proving in a documented research study that a mind-body approach transforms employees.

Shop with Cops
in its Ninth Year!
The purpose of this St. Paul event is to foster positive relationships between youth and officers. Young kids, K-6th grade, are selected each year to shop at one of the local area stores to purchase gifts for members of their immediate family.
Each child is given a small amount of money to spend. Approximately 1-2 children are assigned to each police personnel, who then escorts them around the store and assists in selecting appropriate gifts for each family member. After shopping, the children will eat lunch, wrap their gifts, and continue to get to know the police officers.
