ECI master's alum ('03), has published a book on teacher job satisfaction.  Addressing the alarmingly low rate of job retention in classroom education, this guide offers practical advice to administrators and teachers for avoiding teacher burnout and increasing teacher satisfaction and performance. Since the quality of the classroom teacher is the single most important factor in predicting student success, retention of high-quality teachers is essential to student achievement. This discourse affirms that systemic change can be achieved by applying the strength-based approach of Developmental AssetsŪ to the teacher-administrator relationship, and demonstrates the parallels between a nurturing environment for students and a nurturing environment for teachers. The common adversarial teacher-administrator dichotomy is abandoned in favor of multiple levels of accountability and change, and mutual goals for individual teachers and administrators are advanced. When every stakeholder in the school environment sees teacher job satisfaction as a win-win situation resulting in retention and higher student achievement, staff, students, and administrators can work together to build great places to teach and learn. The accompanying CD-ROM includes reproducible forms and other tools for implementation.

Spring Break 2010!

The School of Education will be offering two service learning opportunities during spring break of 2010: Peru and the Brooklyn Center schools.

Students can earn credits while in Peru for 10-12 days (March 13-21). This course, offered in conjunction with Nursing & Health Sciences, includes an intensive immersion experience in Peru that is hosted by the NGO ProWorld.

SOE is also pleased to offer students an optional field experience at Brooklyn Center Schools, which are located in the north metro area. This experience will include a 5-day, week-long placement in a classroom aligned with students' licensure area (March 15-19).

Students and faculty interested in these opportunities should contact Cindy Mattson, SOE Admin. Asst (cmattson@css.edu or 218-723-6108).
The Great DepressionImagining History
Chery Takkunen and John Bauman, School of Education faculty, facilitated their eighth Imagining History teacher institute the week of August 3-7th with English professor Suzanne Yunis, and history professor Jill Dupont.  Teachers from the Cass Lake Bena School District and teachers from the Twin Cities area came for a full week of learning how to incorporate historical inquiry and writing process into their curriculum. Participants first experienced the process by working on their own family history project. Valerie Tanner and Bill Howes from the SOE's Ojibwe Language Culture program provided sessions on racial and white identity theory during the week as well. Institute participants will continue to have ongoing support and professional development for the next two years. This project was funded by the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office.
