PPI Project Launched. Jeffrey Weisberg developed a project during his time at the Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive. We celebrate the launch of his project through the opening of the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding. Read more about the center here and read "What River Phoenix and $38 Trillion can Teach Us About Peace" cowritten by NPA President Dot Maver.
NPA Alum hosts Holiday Party (submitted by Martha Perkins). Dec. 29 2011 witnessed 28 people having a grand time enjoying a holiday celebration of their work and hope for peace. Guests represented over a dozen peace organizations, including the National Peace Academy, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Christian Peacemaker Teams, the Burlington Peace and Justice Center, Vermont Action For Peace, , Be Peace, Veterans for Peace, and Kids4Peace, to name a few. The festive party was sponsored by the National Peace Academy and hosted by John Reuwer at his home at the Burlington Co-Housing Project.
It was inspiring to gather together with others working for Peace, each in his/her own way and in different organizations, to hear their stories. It was a remarkable and moving example of unselfish personal giving to a cause greater than ourselves. We were a bright and beautiful gang dedicated to that massive job of Peace. Our celebration was filled with wisdom, love, fun, peace, and commitment. We left the party with hope in our hearts and in awe of the goodness in each of us.
Peace Troubador tours for peace. NPA alum, Cecilia St. King is on a Peace Tour sharing her beautiful music, promoting peace and sharing information about the National Peace Academy. To join her at a concert or to support her work, please visit her website. |

Peacebuilder Teleconference Dialogue: Rinaldo Brutoco
|
Rinaldo Brutoco: "Economics and Peace" with Dialogue Moderator, Michael Shank Tuesday, February 7, 2012 (7:00 - 8:30pm)
Join us for a dialogue with Rinaldo Brutoco, President of the World Business Academy, on the topic of "Economics and Peace." This special dialogue will be moderated by Michael Shank, US Vice President at the Institute for Economics and Peace and a board member of the National Peace Academy.
A recent article by Rinaldo Brutoco, "The Wisdom of Two Generals," asks: What would you do if you knew that the entire global economic system and Western way of life were in imminent jeopardy? You would likely do whatever you could to protect it. Academy President Rinaldo Brutoco observes that this is precisely the position in which we find ourselves: our way of life is vulnerable and endangered. He goes on to explain that there is a clear way out, outlines a visionary course of action, and issues a call to action. Click here to access the article.
Free, advanced registration is required. Click here to register.

New Partnership with Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA)
|
The NPA has formed a new partnership with the Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA). PJSA and NPA share many common goals and visions and we are certain that this new partnership will serve in growing and promoting our shared interests.
The PJSA is dedicated to bringing together academics, K-12 teachers and grassroots activists to explore alternatives to violence and share visions and strategies for peacebuilding, social justice, and social change. PJSA also serves as a professional association for scholars in the field of peace and conflict resolution studies, and is the North-American affiliate of the International Peace Research Association. Through this partnership, the NPA will be offering a 15% tuition discount to individual PJSA members, and to the faculty, staff, students, and community members who have membership status in PJSA due to their institutional affiliation.

On January 19th, NPA President, Dot Maver joined Ambassador Chowdhury, Michael O'Malley, and Cora Weiss on a panel presentation at the United Nations first Department of Information Briefing in 2012 entitled, "Culture of Peace: Amplifying the Unseen and Unheard Voices of Peace." As the UN explains, the briefing provided an opportunity to "examine the role of the culture of peace in today's interconnected world as well as the importance of peace as a vehicle for human development and for ultimately realizing the Millennium Development Goals."
