What is Rosacea?
by Kaylene Williams |
| |
With April being Rosacea Awareness Month, this is the perfect time to educate yourself on what this uncomfortable condition is and what treatments are available to minimize its symptoms. Rosacea affects mostly adults over the age of 30, with a higher incidence in women. People with fair skin are more often affected, although darker skin types may also experience symptoms. Rosacea is fairly common (worldwide estimates average about 5% of people), and while its symptoms may wax and wane, it is most often referred to as a chronic condition. There are many factors that can trigger a flare up, from stress to hot weather to diet. Rosacea is usually a progressive disease, and without treatment may continue to worsen over time.
Symptoms
Rosacea affects mostly the central part of the face - chin, cheeks, nose, and central forehead. The condition is often characterized by one or more of the following, although none are absolutely required for a diagnosis of rosacea:
- Flushing of the skin
- Burning or stinging sensation to the skin
- Dry appearance to the skin
- Fluid under the skin - edema
- Burning or itching eyes, eyelid inflammation, styes, red eyes
- Skin thickening, bulbous growths, rhinophyma
IPL As A Solution
Ageless offers IPL treatments as a solution to Rosacea, hyperpigmented and sun damaged skin. Studies have demonstrated that getting treated with an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system is effective in obtaining clearance of 83% of facial redness with minimal side effects, and the effects are maintained. Even more encouraging is that IPL appears to show results quite quickly. Most patients who use IPL notice a reduction in redness and dilated blood vessels after only one or two treatments. Expect around four to six sessions at three to four week intervals for the greatest benefit. Call us now to find out if IPL treatments are right for you!
SkinMedica's Redness Relief CalmPlex is another solution for Rosacea-prone skin. It is the first and only topical moisturizing treatment clinically proven to reduce redness as quickly as one week with continued improvement through twelve weeks.

Dare To Be Bare Show Off Those Legs! | | |
It is common to see veins on the legs, which are often a source of embarrassment making women (and men) self-conscious about wearing shorts or skirts. What many people don't know is there are treatments available to help reduce those veins to make them less unsightly!
Sclerotherapy vs Laser
Sclerotherapy is a safe and highly effective method of treating unwanted spider veins by placing a very concentrated saline solution directly into the veins with a very tiny needle. The YAG laser uses a wavelength of light that is preferentially absorbed by the vessel, making it effective at removing the dilated vessel and safe for the surrounding skin and tissue.
Who is a candidate?
Sclerotherapy is generally recommended for large, bluish vessels, whereas tiny red capillaries are most often treated with the YAG laser. Sclerotherapy works with any skin color and is great for those with darker pigmented skin; laser vein treatments are best for those with lighter pigmented skin - those with darker skin run the risk of hyperpigmentation.
How many treatments are necessary?
Both laser therapy and Sclerotherapy require a series of treatments, the exact number depending on such issues as size and location. The larger the vessels, the more treatments are required. Generally speaking most people will need a minimum of three treatments.
Call us now to learn more about vein treatments.
If you start a series now, you could have beautiful legs by summertime!
