Greetings!
Between work and my kids, I'm always running around like crazy! This time, my middle son, James, the high schooler, broke his pelvis running track. I had no idea that pulling a muscle could actually break a bone! He's okay, but is still undergoing physical therapy.
I'm so proud of my oldest son, Steven, who completed his certification requirements and has started his own, Personal Fitness Trainer business. Please click this link http://stevesfitnesstraining.com/ to view his website and don't miss the special offer for Steve's Landscaping customers below!
Pruning
Perfect time to start pruning! The flowering shrubs are done for the season and the rain has really given ornamental plants the fuel to grow - a lot!! Contact us today for an estimate and get rid of that jungle!
Overseeding Lawns
Many of our customers have inquired about overseeding their lawns. Last year's extreme weather and all the rain we have had so far this season has caused a lot of damage and wash outs. We were excited a couple of months or so ago, thinking that we would be able to get an early start on overseeding, but then the weather turned colder and then it wouldn't stop raining.
The best way to thicken your lawn is to do an aeration before overseeding - this allows the existing grass to establish larger root systems, by which grass plants spread. Follow the aeration up with a good organic starter fertilizer, packed with micro-nutrients, and you'll be enjoying a lush, emerald lawn in six weeks or so.
Let us know if you are ready to rejuvenate your lawn - [email protected].
Sprinklers
We're almost done with this service, so if you haven't done so already, it's time to start up your sprinklers. During a spring turn-on, we check and adjust the heads, run through the zones to make sure everything's working and complete small repairs.
Don't forget, if you're going to plant flowers or grass seed, make sure your sprinklers are on first!
Make your lawn, and your pooch, happy! Have your sprinklers turned-on for the summer! Send us an email!
Contact us today to find out more about any of the services mentioned above! Or whatever else you might need!
Thank You!
Steve

Horticultural News
Current Conditions
Our agricultural extension reports that Anthracnose, brown patch, dollar spot, leaf spot, stripe smut, and red thread fungus are all active at this time on susceptible turf.
If you have a fertilization program with us, we will be watching your lawn closely and let you know if anything is going on. It's best to treat these infections quickly, before they do too much damage.
We've also noticed some leaf & stem blight issues with boxwoods, and a volutella blight on pachysandra. Most of these problems were caused by the weather last year. Please call us if you notice either of these plants in your landscape showing signs of disease.
In addition, Rutgers has reported many incidences of boxwood leaf miner infestation, which can be treated by the correct insecticide spray. Let us know if you see tiny, mosquito-like insects flying around your boxwoods.
If you need to discuss replacing or trying to save damaged ornamentals, please let up know.

Lyme Disease "Perfect-Storm"
According to the Carey Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the reason we may have more ticks, and thus a higher than usual chance of contracting the dreaded Lyme disease, is that there were fewer acorns in 2011!
In 2010, oak trees produced a bumper crop of acorns, which in turn led to an increase in the number of white-footed mice. The mice "pack a one-two punch: they are preferred hosts for black-legged ticks and they are very effective at transmitting
Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease." However, the fall 2011 acorn crop was disastrously small, leaving lots of ticks looking for new warm-blooded dinners. In other words, humans!
While the mild winter seems to be the most logical explanation for the increase in the number of ticks this year, the weather actually only influenced the behavior of the ticks, allowing them to become active earlier.
The true danger to humans (and pets) comes from the nymph-stage ticks during the spring and summer.
You should always check yourself, your kids and your pets after spending time outdoors, but one measure you can take to guard against ticks is to have us spray your property. The product we use has been approved by the DEP for many years, for food crops, and residential uses such as on dogs and infused in clothing, as well as for head lice, etc.
