February 2012

Greetings!

 top

Hmmm...I'm not sure what to say about the winter we just had (for about five-minutes in January). It surely was tough for the snowplow companies - so much preparation for a big fizzle!

Oh well, we've put it behind us and my prediction for this season is continued unexpected weather. Only this time, I mean weather we really don't expect - moderate! I foresee a summer that's not too hot and not too rainy. My Ouija Board has channeled a balmy season, with everyone enjoying the outdoors and discovering nature!

Spring Clean-Up

It seems like that wind howled all weekend!  There were a lot of branches still dangling from trees as a result of the Halloween snowstorm. Watch out when you're outside - some of those branches that were hanging by threads could finally give way and come crashing down!

If you need a spring clean up, we're getting our crews ready. The best way to contact us right now is via email. We'll get you on the list. janeen@steveslandscaping.net

Estimates

This is a great time to get your estimate requests in! As long as there's no snow on the ground, we can look at your property for general maintenance, landscaping, construction, cleaning, lighting system repairs and irrigation installation estimates. Again, email is best, using the link above, but you can call the office as well.

Fertilizer

Getting an early start on the pre-emergent fertilizer application will help keep your lawn crabgrass free.

We are permitted by law to start this application after March 1st. As soon as we have a full route set up, we'll get going. Please let us know if you'd like to be added to our list.

If you are one of our regular maintenance customers, you'll be receiving your contract shortly, so check off the plan you'd like, but let us know now so we can get a jump on  those weeds.

Even if you don't take one of our plans, the first application will help control weeds and green up your lawn quicker when the weather warms up.

Maintenance Contracts

Our Seasonal Maintenance Contracts are in production and should be out within the next week. Please let us know if you have any questions.

deer damage
Deer Damage

As usual, there's been a lot of deer damage to shrubs and plants this winter - maybe more than usual since the weather was fairly friendly and deer could wander freely all winter, establishing new routes for grazing and chomping shrubs.

This is bad for homeowners!  Once the deer establish a new  feeding route, it's really hard to stop them.

We have a few products that help by making the plant taste bad to the deer, but after the damage is done, the only option may be to replace the plant and wrap them next winter. Or, we may be able to recommend a variety that the deer don't eat as much.

Some shrubs may be able to recover if treated properly.  We can recommend a care plan combining fertilizers and dormant oil applications that will give the plant the nutrition it needs to grow new foliage.

If you need to discuss replacing or trying to save damaged ornamentals, please let up know.

The trouble with weather forecasting is that it's right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it.  ~Patrick Young
