Greetings!
I'm almost done with a fantastic patio project. Check out this link to see a side show of the work in progress - in our next issue we'll feature the finished masterpiece!
Despite the heat, our guys are working hard to keep your yard looking great. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you enjoy your time outdoors this summer.
Lawn If your lawn is too dry, we're going to skip cutting it - we'll use the missed cut in the fall to keep up with the leaves. Also, if you're watering the lawn and you notice brown spots or a strange blackish cast to your lawn, call us right away - you could have an infestation of chinch bugs or a fungus. We can apply a treatment product to prevent further damage.
Sprinklers
Of course, with all this heat, the sprinkler department is pretty busy. You'll notice right away if a section of your lawn is not being covered by your sprinklers - give us a call and we'll take care of it for you. Here's a link for mid-summer discounts.
If you haven't already done so, now is the time to increase the length of time your sprinklers run and/or the frequency. If your town has alternate day water restrictions in place, you might have to water AM and PM to keep up with the weather.
We're offering a super special on sprinkler system installation. More details below!
Pruning
We're still pruning shrubs and trimming trees. After all the rain this spring, many people's shrubs are overgrown and messy. Pruning not only makes the whole house and yard look better, it's good for the shrubs, encouraging new growth and promoting stronger infrastructure. Attached is a coupon for savings on pruning.
This is also the time of year for bugs and diseases of shrubs and ornamental plants, so if you're watering as you should be and you notice a shrub is yellow or losing leaves or it looks as if there are holes in the leaves, give us a call so we can diagnose and treat it before it's too late.
Contact us today to find out more about any of the services mentioned above!
Enjoy - this is what we wait for all year!
Thanks,
Steve

Powdery Mildew
You might notice a gray, powdery coating on your lilacs, roses or phlox plants this time of year. If so, that's powdery mildew, a fungus that affects many plants during the hottest part of summer.
Powdery mildew is caused by more than 300 species of fungi. They are biotropes, meaning they get all their food from other living organisms. The host plant is not usually seriously damaged by the fungi, but if you count on that plant to provide fall color, the leaves may be ruined by prolonged infection. Also, new growth and buds may be destroyed. The fungus is generally very specific to individual species of plants, so your rose will not infect your lilac, but if the conditions are similar, the lilac may get its own specific strain.
The best way to prevent powdery mildew is to give susceptible plants room for air to circulate. Don't plant them on top of each other and make sure everything is properly pruned. It's important to clean up all dead leaves on the ground throughout the growing season as well as in the fall and certainly in the spring.
We have some chemicals that can treat the fungus, so if it really bothers you, give us a call or email [email protected]!
