Last Minute Fall Services                                                       November 2010

Greetings!

 top

The end of the lawn season is getting near. I'm always a little sad to see the beautiful green grass go dormant and join all the rest of the brown and gray in the landscape.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be finishing the fall clean-ups.

If you need an estimate for us to take care of your leaves, please let us know.

Fall Color

We had some fabulous fall color this year. I don't know why, but the red maples seemed particularly striking - surprising after the tough summer we had.

This would be a good  time to take note of where you need some color in your yard. Purple, red, crimson, orange -  there are a lot of beautiful trees that we can plant in the spring to frame your house in vibrant hues next fall.

Check below for some important information.

There's still time for sprinkler winterizations, fall clean-ups and winter shrub services. We're setting up our snow removal routes, too, so let us know if you need a price on plowing.

We also have some time-saving holiday solutions this year. If you need an estimate shoot Janeen an email [email protected].

Enter to win a beautiful, hand-decorated, Holiday Wreath. Just follow the link below to complete a short survey.  We'd love to hear from you on how we can continue to improve all aspects of our service. We will listen!

Please check out our website for some pictures of our most recently completed projects!  www.steveslandscaping.net  And if you are looking for a new car, our friends at Joyce Honda, Rt 10, Denville, are having their biggest sale of the year over Thanksgiving weekend! Final Calls
You still have time to book your late season services!  Email or call today for these fall/winter services:

Sprinkler Winterization - Before the deep freeze comes, turn your water off in the house.  Leave the tap open outside (the one that's part of the sprinkler system), so that the water does not remain trapped. Contact us to make an appointment.  [email protected]

Fall Clean-up - We'll blow the leaves off your lawn, out of the beds and plants, and away from the house.  Dead leaves carry diseases like fungus and rust; they host insects such as ticks, grasshoppers, etc.  Contact us for an estimate and to get on our schedule.  [email protected]

Winter Protect - This liquid product is sprayed onto your valuable ornamental shrubs to help them survive the freeze/thaw cycle.  In other words, it helps prevent frostbite!  This simple, inexpensive application can make a big difference to the overall health of your ornamentals.  Contact us for a price. [email protected]

Snow

Don't even think it, right? But snow (or ice) will be here

eventually Snowmanand it's better to be prepared than stuck!

Return your Snowplow contract as soon as possible so we can make sure you are on our plow lists. We are setting up our routes now and it's important for us to make sure we have the personnel and equipment to service everyone properly.

Pizza Oven Update!
Jack & Pizza
Jack makes a delicious pizza!
You might remember in our previous newsletter I mentioned I was working on my backyard.  I finally got the Pizza oven working (still needs some finishing touches) and the kids LOVE it.  Jack found a fabulous recipe for pizza dough on-line and I think it's even better than dough from our local pizzeria!

We have a few technical details to work out, like getting the temperature of the fire right and keeping the pizza from flopping in half, but practicing is fun for all!
Happy Thanksgiving
At night, by the fire,
The colors of the bushes
And of the fallen leaves,
Repeating themselves,
Turned in the room,
Like the leaves themselves
Turning in the wind.

Fall/Winter Garden Care

Here are a few final tasks and tips to prepare your garden for the winter.

Keep watering trees and shrubs until the ground freezes.

Wrap your shrubs to prevent snow and deer damage.

Move mulch away from the base (trunk flair) of your ornamental trees.

Plant spring flowering bulbs.

Ornamental grasses and butterfly bushes should be cut back in late winter (March) to encourage new growth.

Do cut back the dead flowers stalks on asters, down to the root leaves. Also, it's okay to cut back peonies, daylillies, yarrow and phlox.

Don't prune these common garden plants in the fall - Mums, lupines, lavender: the branches protect the roots.  Hydrangeas & lilacs: the flower buds are set for bloom in spring - you will cut off all your blooms. Black-eyed susans: the birds love the seeds.
