Mid-Fall Specials October 2009
Greetings!

The fall foliage is beautiful this year, isn't it?  Maybe all that rain finally paid off!

The new radiant-heated driveways we've been installing are great!  They are energy efficient and they really work.  The article below gives more details, and there's a link to the website of the supplier we use.  I can't wait to install the system in my own driveway!

A couple of reminders - don't forget to call to have your sprinklers winterized.  The cold weather is getting closer.  Just turn your water off and leave a message on extension 5, or email us at SPRINKLER WINTERIZATION

Also, we're setting up our schedule for FALL CLEAN-UPS.  If you need us to clean up your leaves this year, please let us know so we can schedule it.

We will be sending out our Snowplowing Contracts shortly.  Please let us know if you need a SNOWPLOWING ESTIMATE.

I hope you are able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall colors.
Regards,
Steve
Heated Driveways
Dual Track Roadway
Heated driveway snow melting systems are energy efficient, maintenance-free and automatically operated. They detect precipitation and air temperature and automatically switch heat on and off as needed.

The heating cable we use is the most durable radiant snow melting cable available and comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty. The cable distributes heat evenly, providing a heated driveway and/or sidewalk that is kept free of ice and snow throughout the winter. This system is energy efficient because 99% of the energy consumed is focused upward and goes into snow melting, not into the ground.

The fully programmable snow melting system makes labor-intensive snow shoveling, salting and the use of harsh chemicals a thing of the past.

Radiant heated driveway systems also increase the life span of the driveway by eliminating salt corrosion, frost damage, and potential damage from snow plows and other manual snow removal methods.

Heated driveway snow melting systems save you money because you don't have to pay to have the driveway plowed and the system itself operates only when needed, using the minimum amount of energy.

How great would it be to know that when you get home from work, or get up in the morning, your driveway will be clear and safe?

Price matters to you and quality matters to us.

Apples - Facts, Myths & Legends

It's apple season.  Here are some facts about the ubiquitous apple that you may find surprising.  There's more on our website - just follow the link to read the real story of William Tell, Johnny Appleseed and Snow White.

- Archeologists have found evidence that humans have been enjoying apples since at least 6500 B.C.

- The apple tree originated in an area between the Caspian and the Black Sea.

- Apples were introduced to New York by the European settlers who brought seeds with them in the 1600s.

- Apple trees are valued not only for their delicious fruits, but for their wood that is used for making mallet heads and golf clubs.

- Pieces of apple wood add excellent flavor for smoking foods, and the split wood makes ideal fire logs.

- Apples are a member of the rose family.

- It takes energy from 50 leaves to produce one apple.

- Fresh apples float because 25 percent of their volume is air.

- About 50% of apples grown in the United States are sold fresh and 50% are processed into apple juice, apple sauce, or dehydrated apple products.

- There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples grown in the world. More on apples....

Fall Leaves - An OptionFall Tree

If you're considering starting a vegetable garden next year, just let us know.  We can collect all the leaves from your property and pile them in the area you intend to use for your garden. We can put up a light fence to contain them so they don't blow back in your yard. Over the winter, they will decompose and enrich the soil. Please note, leaves piled up around shrubs and plants can be harmful as they smother the root crown and harbor insects and disease.

If you'd like more information on this constructive use for fall leaves, please email
[email protected].

Fall Ideas for You and Your Kids

Fall is a fantastic time for families to explore and experience nature.  Here are some ideas for you and your kids to enjoy.

Pumpkins - After the hayride and pumpkin picking activities, after you've carved your jack-o'-lantern, save some seeds to plant in your garden for next year.

Or, if you don't carve all your pumpkins, when you're ready to throw them away, if you put them in your garden some seeds will usually grow (I've done this with the tiny, gourd-like pumpkins too, and saved some money!) The kids are really excited to see their own pumpkins grow.

You can also dry the seeds and use them to decorate cut-out cardboard shapes -  like turkeys, or Christmas trees.  These can be spray painted, decorated with glitter, etc. and used to decorate your home.  Think of them like teardrop macaroni! You can color them with markers, punch holes in the center and string them for a colorful necklace.
