Dear Friends and Neighbors, My campaign to assist the families of our public safety officers who were permanently disabled in the line of duty moved a step closer to becoming law when my bill was scheduled to be debated in the Idaho House of Representatives this week. I am deeply appreciative of Rep. Cliff Bayer of Boise for carrying my bill and he informs me he is very optimistic of it passing soon. I will be sure to keep you informed as this progresses. Yesterday, on March 5th, I received a hand delivered letter from the Attorney General's office thanking me for agreeing to sponsor in the Senate a bill from the Idaho House which will enable law enforcement agencies to get the power to subpoena Internet Service Providers (ISP's) for information on suspected viewers of child pornography. I was deeply disturbed to have learned from the Attorney General's office that the Idaho Crimes Against Children Task Force had identified in one month alone 984 computers in the state of Idaho that were involved with viewing or sharing videos containing child pornography. Studies have clearly demonstrated that a large percentage of individuals convicted of possessing or sharing child pornography admit to having physical contact with children and claim an average of more than 30 victims. This legislation, if adopted, would remove the shield of anonymity that the Internet can unfortunately provide to these individuals. I will fight for this legislation to be passed.
This coming week I am also pleased to inform that I will bring, again, proposed legislation before the Senate State Affairs Committee that would compel Idaho businesses to verify that the employees they hire are legally entitled to seek employment in the United States. I passionately believe, now, more than ever, that the citizens and legal immigrants to this country are given preference to the jobs they need in order to feed their families. I believe it is nothing more than a myth that there are no costs to our state or society by the continued employment of illegal workers. The costs are immense and I estimate they could be costing the State of Idaho as much as $100 million per year. I will be sure to provide more information to you about this in the coming weeks. Once again, my thanks to you for reading this newsletter and as before, I ask you to please consider forwarding it to your friends and neighbors to that they too can keep up with events important to them happening here in Boise. Sincerely yours, Mike Jorgenson mnjorgen@senate.idaho.gov
