Legislative Update with Senator Jorgenson
2/11/09
Idaho State Legislature
Greetings from Boise!

This is my first newsletter that I am sending as State Senator representing District 3.  You have received this email because at some point you have sent me an email and I have assumed this meant you were either a constituent in District 3 or concerned about issues from the Hayden Lake area or all Idaho.

I intend to send a regular newsletter throughout the legislative calendar and periodically outside of the session; I feel it is a vital part of our democracy for the people to receive regular information from their elected officials.  If you did not wish to receive this email, my apologies and if you do not wish to receive any more, please hit the unsubscribe button.

We are now in our fourth week of this, the 60th Idaho Legislature and while the budget rightfully dominates the majority of headlines there are other very important issues being debated here in Boise.

Of particular concern to me are issues that I feel cannot be ignored simply due to our national economic crisis.  Indeed, some are now, I feel, even more important due to the economic situation we find ourselves in.

Immigration is on the top of my list.  Special interests in Idaho continue to perpetuate the lie that cheap foreign labor saves taxpayers money by providing us cheaper food.  They fail to point out the astronomical costs to our Medicaid, Corrections and Education system by burdening us with annual costs that approach or exceed $100 million-just here in Idaho.  I will continue to shine a light into some very dark places with regards to this and make no apologies for it.

I am also deeply concerned by efforts of local county commissioners to derail what is quite frankly a very well crafted solution to the Coeur d'Alene Lake Management Plan.  I will keep my fellow Legislators eyes on the ball and will not let them be distracted from sticking to the solutions devised by the Department of Environmental Quality, the State of Idaho and the federal government.

Please contact me if you have any issues or concerns you would like to make me aware of.  I also urge you to forward this email to 10 of your neighbors so that they can also be kept in the loop during this difficult time.  An educated populace is what our Great Republic was founded on and now as much as ever, we need that spirit to see us through to better days.

Sincerely yours,

Mike Jorgenson
Lake Management: Coeur d'Alene
Another issue that concerns me is how we manage our greatest natural resource, Lake Coeur D'Alene. Here is a guest editorial I wrote on the topic.

Illegal Immigration

Here is an editorial I wrote regarding the immigration issue in the state of Idaho.
