The New Hub Guide

The new Hub Initiative has taken off and is still growing!  More local  VWS events are ocurring and more VWS members are participating in
these watercolor related activities. As can be expected when a new initiative is launched, questions have arisen around our newly formed Hubs. The VWS Board has written a Hub Guide in order to carefully answer these questions. You can find the Guide on our new website.  Our current Hub Guide contains basic information regarding the" who, what, why and where" of our Hubs. As our Hubs continue to grow, it is expected additional questions will require thoughtful attention.  The Board will address the questions as they occur and add the information
to the Hub Guide. If you have Hub related questions please contact Pamela Dexter, Hub Director:

Burlington Hub St. Albans Hub:

12 members from the Burlington/St. Albans Hub are having their day in court. It's actually a great opportunity: Jean Cannon has organized an exhibition that will hang for the next two months in the Department of Justice in Burlington. Jean Cannon, Marni McKitrick, Kathy Berry Bergeron, Mary Ann Godin, Karen Casper, Nancy Stone, Amanda Amend, Letty Annis, Audrey Boobar, Sally Hughes, Sarah Rosedahl and Van Fryman are participating with multiple works. In all, the show features 58 pieces that are hanging outside the attorney's offices on the third floor of the Dept. of Justice. The exhibit is not open to the public, but it is good exposure for us nonetheless. Thanks Jean for making this possible!

VOLUNTEER NEWS

If you volunteered during this past year (from the 2011 fall meeting to the present), we'd like to thank you in our 2012 fall program. Did you help with a program, exhibition or Hub event? Please let Amanda know at amanda.amend@gmail.com.

WANTED:

Please join us as part of our PR team. This is a way you can make a big difference without a big investment in time. You would write a brief press release for each of our three shows (there's an app. for that), and our fabulous volunteer Kathy Berry Bergeron will send it to media outlets. This job takes only three hours PER YEAR.

Contact Amanda if you are interested.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

"We" are YOU!

Everybody is busy, but it's rewarding to be involved, and since the VWS is a 100% volunteer organization, we can't operate without your help.  Come join the fun:

Hub Point Person for Middlebury/Rutland. Are you interested in local activities?  They can be as simple as a Salon where you share paintings and get feedback, or as complicated (and fun) as an exhibition.  It's up to you!

Co-Point Person for Montpelier/Stowe.  Nancy Cleveland is brimming with ideas for activities in the Montpelier/Stowe Hub, and she'd like help with the email/contact part of the Hub Point Person's role.  If you are comfortable with email, please help us with this.

Director of Volunteers.  I've loved working with you!  My term is up this year though, so please consider stepping up for this position or nominating a friend.  It's a great way to get to know people and to be involved with the VWS.

Please contact amanda.amend@gmail.com to talk more about how you can help and enjoy the rewards of being involved.

THE FIRST EVER MEMBER'S CHOICE AWARD!

An idea was sparked at the Annual Awards Exhibition at the Chaffee, by Lynn and Rebecca, to have a People's Choice Award.   We decided to take it one step further and sponsor a "Member's Choice Award" at the Fall Meeting.

Here is how it will work:

  • Any member can participate
  • You must personally attend to win
  • Entry is simple...
    • do a watercolor painting of any size using any watercolor technique of the reference photograph below
    • bring it to the VWS Fall Meeting at 9:30 to set it up.
    • it does not need to be framed but should be mounted on something stable for viewing/
  • Each VWS member will be given a voting sheet and asked to anonymously select their choice for the winning painting.
  • These will be tallied and the winner will be announced during lunch and receive a $50 gift certificate.

Visions of Vermont September 2012 Show

The September 23, 2012 reception for our juried show at the Visions of Vermont Gallery was quite a success. It was a sunny fall day and well over 100 tourists as well as VWS members, friends, patrons and others viewed our lovely display at the Visions Gallery in Jeffersonville. The art was impressive and everyone enjoyed the delicious food and drinks supplied by VWS members and Jane and Terry Shaw, the gallery owners.

There was a real team effort in getting this show organized, hung and the reception held. Thanks to all who pitched in and helped make this such a success. If you haven't been to the show yet, there's still time - the show is open until October 19. Be sure to bring your camera as the leaves are getting spectacular in that part of Vermont!

From Paedra Peter Bramhall:

America the Beautiful: Paedra Peter Bramhall

Exhibition
September 26-November 3, 2012

RECEPTION/Vernissage
Saturday, October 6, 3-5PM

In "America the Beautiful," transgendered artist Paedra Peter Bramhall delivers a powerful series of paintings that feature various nude figures in tumultuous positions in a small room wall-papered with the American flag. The effect is a meditation on post-9/11 America, a place that can be liberating yet claustrophobic; free yet judgmental; and, like the figures in the paintings, pornographic yet sacred. Each of the twenty-two paintings are rendered in sumi, acrylic, and india inks on a heavy rag vellum paper.
