HUB-BUB-BUB
The New Hub Guide The new Hub Initiative has taken off and is still growing! More local VWS events are ocurring and more VWS members are participating in these watercolor related activities. As can be expected when a new initiative is launched, questions have arisen around our newly formed Hubs. The VWS Board has written a Hub Guide in order to carefully answer these questions. You can find the Guide on our new website. Our current Hub Guide contains basic information regarding the" who, what, why and where" of our Hubs. As our Hubs continue to grow, it is expected additional questions will require thoughtful attention. The Board will address the questions as they occur and add the information to the Hub Guide. If you have Hub related questions please contact Pamela Dexter, Hub Director:

Burlington Hub St. Albans Hub:
12 members from the Burlington/St. Albans Hub are having their day in court. It's actually a great opportunity: Jean Cannon has organized an exhibition that will hang for the next two months in the Department of Justice in Burlington. Jean Cannon, Marni McKitrick, Kathy Berry Bergeron, Mary Ann Godin, Karen Casper, Nancy Stone, Amanda Amend, Letty Annis, Audrey Boobar, Sally Hughes, Sarah Rosedahl and Van Fryman are participating with multiple works. In all, the show features 58 pieces that are hanging outside the attorney's offices on the third floor of the Dept. of Justice. The exhibit is not open to the public, but it is good exposure for us nonetheless. Thanks Jean for making this possible!
August 11 - October 8 - 31st Annual Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, Old Forge, NY
We are working with the Old Forge Arts Center for discounted tickets & possibly discounted accommodations for VWS members.
Stay tuned for further information on this not-to-be-missed show. A long drive, but well worth the time. For more information on the show, see:
VOLUNTEER NEWS
If you volunteered during this past year (from the 2011 fall meeting to the present), we'd like to thank you in our 2012 fall program. Did you help with a program, exhibition or Hub event? Please let Amanda know at amanda.amend@gmail.com. WANTED: Please join us as part of our PR team. This is a way you can make a big difference without a big investment in time. You would write a brief press release for each of our three shows (there's an app. for that), and our fabulous volunteer Kathy Berry Bergeron will send it to media outlets. This job takes only three hours PER YEAR. Contact Amanda if you are interested. Hub Point Person needed for Middlebury/Rutland. Are you interested in local activities? They can be as simple as a Salon where you share paintings and get feedback, or as complicated (and fun) as an exhibition. It's up to you! Co-Point Person for Montpelier/Stowe. Nancy Cleveland is brimming with ideas for activities in the Montpelier/Stowe Hub, and she'd like help with the email/contact part of the Hub Point Person's role. If you are comfortable with email, please help us with this. Contact Pam Dexter if you are interested in either of the above Hub positions. From Amanda Amend: Director of Volunteers position open: I've loved working with you! My term is up this year though, so please consider stepping up for this position or nominating a friend. It's a great way to get to know people and to be involved with the VWS. |

THE FIRST EVER MEMBER'S CHOICE AWARD!
An idea was sparked at the Annual Awards Exhibition at the Chaffee, by Lynn and Rebecca, to have a People's Choice Award. We decided to take it one step further and sponsor a "Member's Choice Award" at the Fall Meeting.
Here is how it will work:
- Any member can participate
- You must personally attend to win
- Entry is simple...
- do a watercolor painting of any size using any watercolor technique of the reference photograph below
- bring it to the VWS Fall Meeting at 9:30 to set it up.
- it does not need to be framed but should be mounted on something stable for viewing/
- Each VWS member will be given a voting sheet and asked to anonymously select their choice for the winning painting.
- These will be tallied and the winner will be announced during lunch and receive a $50 gift certificate.
Photo reference for the Member's Choice Award
This is a photo of sea glass collected on Wallis Sands Beach, Rye, NH, mixed with some sand, water, flowers and late afternoon sun. If you want the photo emailed to you just email, Jan Olmstead

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS:
VWS Hires a Bookkeeper to Assist in our Financial Record Keeping. The VWS Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that we have hired Betty Waterman as our bookkeeper. She began her duties as of August 1st this year. Betty is a professional bookkeeper whom Peter Land, our treasurer, introduced us to this year. She will be the person who deposits all checks and writes all checks for the society; Peter remains our treasurer and will still oversee the accounting and sign the checks and report on financial activity to the Board. The VWS has been very lucky to have Peter Land, CPA serve as our treasurer. He has set our accounting up for the long term in QuickBooks with the background and knowledge that comes with being a certified public accountant. With the hiring of an independent bookkeeper the board has insured that our financial books will be kept consistently from one treasurer to the next. We also expect that these changes will help us when the time comes to seek future treasurers. For Directors and Point Persons of Hubs that need to send checks to the VWS for deposit, please send them to Betty Waterman instead of Peter Land. For persons wishing to get reimbursement for a legitimate expense on behalf of the Society please send your request using a form downloaded from our website to Betty, she will cut the check and Peter will sign it and send it on to you. Members, you will still send your membership fees to Joann, (Membership Director), your exhibition fees to Rebecca (Exhibitions Director), and your registration fees for annual meetings and workshops to Claudia (Programs Director). These Directors need your information in a timely manner and they will pass your checks on to Betty. Betty Waterman's contact information is: Better Enterprises 19 Rock Pine Drive East Thetford, VT 05043 802-785-3064 Home betterenterprises@myfairpoint.net Thank you. It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2010 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673.
