HUB-BUB-BUB
The New Hub Guide The new Hub Initiative has taken off and is still growing! More local VWS events are ocurring and more VWS members are participating in these watercolor related activities. As can be expected when a new initiative is launched, questions have arisen aroumd our newly formed Hubs. The VWS Board has written a Hub Guide in order to carefully answer these questions. You can find the Guide on our new website. Our current Hub Guide contains basic information regarding the" who, what, why and where" of our Hubs. As our Hubs contine to grow, it is expected additional questions will require thoughtful attention. The Board will address the questions as they occur and add the information to the Hub Guide. If you have Hub related questions please contact Pamela Dexter, Hub Director: Special Notice! Rewarding volunteer openings with VWS! We need a few more Hub Point People to plan fun, interesting and exciting watercolor-related events, for only a few hours of your time every month or two! Get a friend to volunteer with you to be a co-Point Person and it's even better. Other VWS hubs have great ideas you can use to plan events in your area. Please contact Pam Dexter, Hub Director at Pam Dexter to find out how you can get in on the fun too.

From Tony Conner:
Now showing at the Hotel Coolidge Zollikofer Gallery:
The exhibit includes 21 watercolor paintings. All are recent paintings of New England landscapes or coastal scenes. Most of the landscapes are Vermont subjects, but there are scenes from other locations in New England as well. The coastal scenes are all from the area of Massachusetts known as Cape Ann - which includes the Manchester-by-the-Sea, Gloucester and Rockport areas. The exhibit actually was open to the public on March 16 and runs through May 16. The Artists Reception is this coming Friday, April 6 from 5 -7 pm at the Hotel Coolidge, 39 Main Street, White River Junction, VT. Paintings by Tony Conner in the Coolidge Show:

From Gary Eckhart: Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition Opens
Gary is one of seven watercolor artists showing work in the first annual Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition at the Festival Gallery in Waitsfield. All seven artists are members of the Vermont Watercolor Society and were selected for their diverse styles of painting. The show presents a broad picture of the various techniques capable of the watercolor medium to create subject matter from landscapes to florals to still life. The six artists in addition to Gary are James Gardner, Peter Jeziorski, Peter Huntoon, Barbara Pafume, Robert O'Brien and Peter Sydorowich all of Vermont. The Festival Gallery is operated by the Valley Arts Foundation and has recently undergone renovation with the addition of new display space and expanded lighting. The work was done specifically to accommodate the watercolor show and was made possible by a grant from an anonymous donor. The Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition runs thru May 4. The Gallery is located in the Village Square Shopping Center on Route 100 in Waitsfield. 802.496.6682 Due to irregular hours sometimes necessitated at the Festival Gallery, visitors are encouraged to call the gallery at 802.583.224 to verify opening hours. DON DALTON by Diane Bell

The common term "Renaissance man" is used to describe a person who is well educated or who excels in a wide variety of subjects. This term definitely describes Don Dalton, a VWS signature member who lives in Chester with his wife and two beautiful daughters. Don has been and continues to be invaluable as our web administrator. Don grew up in Buffalo, NY, but has lived in various parts of the country, including California, Colorado, Florida, Cape Cod, and NYC. He was a cook/chef for much of his adult life and worked in fine dining. In 1996, Don started graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design becoming a landscape architect, working in that field since graduation. Right now, he is a stay-at-home dad who works from home and takes care of the two girls, a one-year old and a three-year old. "In such a situation, finding uninterrupted time to paint requires me to work in the very early hours of the morning," Don says. Dalton began painting in oils while in high school, and during that time, he won second prize in the Holland (NY) Tulip Festival art show. He received a scholarship to attend the Portland School of Art, but he was young, foolish and stubborn and didn't go because of the English requirement. (Ironically, he said that he studied quite a bit of that later). Don stopped painting shortly after high school and joined the Navy. He served four years as a hospital corpsman and lab technician, and ended up running the microbiology lab at Key West Naval Hospital. After the Navy, Dalton studied philosophy and received a BA from Colorado State University. It was during his last year at CSU that he started painting again. Don studied oil painting at the Art Students League of New York, the Cape Museum of Fine Art, and at the Boston Museum School. He studied watercolor at Rhode Island School of Design with Tom Sgouros. Dalton is a member of the Southern Vermont Art Center and the Copley Society (Boston), where he's won the designation of "Copley Artist. He's also won two Juror's Choice awards and one Honorable Mention at the Copley Society, all for watercolor paintings. This year Don has paintings in the National Watercolor Society Open Show and the New England Watercolor Society show. Don says, "Lately my paintings have developed to reflect two related themes. One is of emerging or coming into clarity, and the other is one of clarity or insight. Although the paintings are primarily of landscapes, the real subject is based on expressing a feeling which is generally only loosely related to the apparent subject matter." He continued, "(The subject) may in fact be much more closely related to, and inspired by, a piece of music, for example a movement in a quartet or piano concerto. I've explored somewhat the aesthetics behind painting and so far what I've come up with is that a painting is an expression of a harmonic feeling, like a complex chord hardly able to be expressed in words. That chord is the statement of the painting."

Ted Nutall and Mel Stabin return to the
Landgrove INN Mel Stabin and Ted Nuttall enjoyed being in Vermont at the Landgrove Inn so much that they both are set to return in 2012. Ted is scheduled for June 11-13 while Mel is coming July 9-13. For those folks that missed the last workshops, this next year they get another chance.
"Both of these artists put on the best workshops I have been to and the responses from other participants have all been very positive! Before I took Ted Nuttalls worhshop this past summer I had never painted a portrait and now I am not affraid of the subject. He is a great teacher and fun too! As for Mel Stabin, he is really great to watch doing a demo. It is inspiring to see how he makes his subject look just right with just a few strokes of his brush. Both teachers are very helpful and if any one wants an exciting learning experience they can go to www.landgroveinn.com to sign up."

VWS Partners
It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2010 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673.
