HUB-BUB-BUB
The New Hub Guide The new Hub Initiative has taken off and is still growing! More local VWS events are ocurring and more VWS members are participating in these watercolor related activities. As can be expected when a new initiative is launched, questions have arisen around our newly formed Hubs. The VWS Board has written a Hub Guide in order to carefully answer these questions. You can find the Guide on our new website. Our current Hub Guide contains basic information regarding the" who, what, why and where" of our Hubs. As our Hubs continue to grow, it is expected additional questions will require thoughtful attention. The Board will address the questions as they occur and add the information to the Hub Guide. If you have Hub related questions please contact Pamela Dexter, Hub Director: Special Notice! Rewarding volunteer openings with VWS! We need a Hub Point People for Middlebury to plan fun, interesting and exciting watercolor-related events, for only a few hours of your time every month or two! Get a friend to volunteer with you to be a co-Point Person and it's even better. Other VWS hubs have great ideas you can use to plan events in your area. Please contact Pam Dexter, Hub Director at Pam Dexter to find out how you can get in on the fun too.

Our planning session was followed by an open workshop/demo on jpeg digital images, offered by Jim Mauchly. He answered individual questions regarding our individual camera capabilities.

PAST EVENTS:
Eight members of the VWS Burlington/St. Albans hub toured the Papeterie St.-Armand paper factory in Montreal on June 5. Factory owner David Caruthers explained the processes of making various types of handmade and machine made paper. The tour started in an area with bales of various colors of cotton fabrics, to cutting machines, giant roller machines to make sheets of paper pulp stock, to large tubs of wet paper pulp in which he dipped the frame to make several sheets while we watched. At the end of the tour the group was provided with several types of handmade papers to try with our paints. The group had a much better understanding and appreciation of handmade watercolor papers by the end of the visit. A lunch at Atwater Market, with its colorful stalls of flowering plants and delicious foods followed the paper factory tour.

Susan Abbott Workshop-Report:
From Claudia Carl:
On June 9th there were 17 of us gathered together at the Middlebury Inn to have our questions answered about the Business of Being a Professional Artist. Susan Abbott did a great job of pointing us in the direction of a path to follow with a booklet as a guide to help us with the hurdles artists encounter on our way to being successful. We went thru a range of topics from Psychological to Practical with worksheets created for us by Susan. There was talk about making use of digital photography, the Internet and social networking for sales and publicity. All in all we had a really informative session leaving each of us ready to get ourselves motivated to set our goals and make lists of the steps needed to be taken to accomplish those goals, I would recommend this workshop to all the creative folks in Vermont who would like to take that next step. I would also like to thank the Vermont Watercolor Society for generously helping to make this event a bit more affordable. If anyone wants to check with Susan about her workshops or her blogs, she can be found at Susan Abbott's Website .

Ted Nutall and Mel Stabin return to the
Landgrove INN Mel Stabin and Ted Nuttall enjoyed being in Vermont at the Landgrove Inn so much that they both are set to return in 2012. Ted is scheduled for June 11-13 while Mel is coming July 9-13. For those folks that missed the last workshops, this next year they get another chance.
"Both of these artists put on the best workshops I have been to and the responses from other participants have all been very positive! Before I took Ted Nuttalls worhshop this past summer I had never painted a portrait and now I am not affraid of the subject. He is a great teacher and fun too! As for Mel Stabin, he is really great to watch doing a demo. It is inspiring to see how he makes his subject look just right with just a few strokes of his brush. Both teachers are very helpful and if any one wants an exciting learning experience they can go to www.landgroveinn.com to sign up."

It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2010 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673.
