The Yupo workshop was an exceptional learning experience under Isobel Cochran's teaching.  Eight students from several Hubs participated Jan 14, 2012 at the Plainfield, NH Fire Station.  Adding to this special day was a viewing of the stage backdrop designed by Maxfied Parrish which hangs in the Town Hall.

Dec. 2 2011

Nine VWS members who live in the Burlington/St. Albans hub gathered for a holiday card-making workshop at the lovely home of VWS member Van Fryman, in Jericho on December 2. Kathy Bergeron, Annelein Beaukenkamp and Lynn Cummings demonstrated ideas for holiday cards. Van showed us many previous years' Christmas cards that he's reproduced from his original paintings. There was also some very practical discussion about where to have small run reproductions made, card sizes and where to purchase the proper sized envelopes for your cards. Other VWS members in attendance were: Sally Hughes, Letty Annis, Rosemary Abele, Patrick Kennedy, Penny Moore and Van Fryman.

If you have an idea for an activity or event for this hub, please send your ideas to:   Marni

Linda , or Lynn We would also welcome your ideas about times of day that work best for you, as we want to make the events as available to everyone as much as possible.

Respectfully submitted,

Lynn Cummings

TONY CONNOR WORKSHOP:

Wet in Wet Watercolor  Saturday & Sunday, February 18 & 19, 2012  Taraden Bed & Breakfast, North Bennington, Vermont

The "wet into wet" technique is one of the most basic and most beautiful available to the watercolorist and produces a look that is impossible in any other medium. This class will focus on the wet -into-wet technique exclusively, using it to produce paintings that are loose and flowing while still retaining control and recognizable shapes.  The wet in wet technique is often employed in floral paintings because the of the soft texture and soft edges it creates.  It is just as good for landscapes and we'll use the technique to create paintings of both subjects.

The weekend long class will teach the basic technique but will also have the effect of allowing you to loosen up the look of your work and give you confidence as well as courage with your watercolors!

Over the course of the two days, we'll cover the fundamental elements of the wet in wet watercolor  technique:

- basic wet into wet washes

- mixing & mingling

- the all important "dry into wet" technique

- planning your painting for success

This class is meant for those with at least a bit of experience with watercolor and some basic drawing skills as well. The class meets at the Taraden Bed & Breakfast Media Barn, 183 Park Street, North Bennington, VT.  Fee - $175 for the weekend long class.  Accommodations not included in the cost of the class.

THE VWS BOARD ENTERS THE 21ST CENTURY

At the Board's planning session last November it was determined that the number of annual BOD meetings needed to be increased to address, in a timely fashion, the ever growing amount of VWS business.   Going from 4 to 6 annual Board meetings would mean additional travel for each of the BOD members...an unrealistic requirement.

As an alternative to the additional travel and an alternative to bad weather conditions, the Board is using an online meeting software, Go-To-Meeting.com.   This allows them to meet remotely on-line having both audio and visual capabilities.   Imagine, being in a board meeting still in your pajamas with the cat on your lap and, coffee in hand!   Of course, face to face meeting will still happen as usual four times a year.

VWS WEBSITE

Renewed & Improved

A revision of our VWS website has been underway for the last 6-8 months both in response to requests from our

membership and the need to update some of the sites technology.    The new site will go live on March 1st. with the VWS web address remaining the same.    The new platform makes it much easier to update and keep current.   One brand new exciting feature with be the ability to talk to one another using a blog.   Each Hub will have their own blog in order to keep folks updated on activities, needs, future plans, last minute changes, etc.   Another big improvement is the gallery section with new technology that allows us to create and update gallery pages easily.    There will be a small, one time setup fee for new gallery pages but all image and bio updates will now be offered to our membership at not charge.

VOLINTEERS NEEDED!

Many thanks to those of you who volunteered in 2011. The VWS has become a leading arts organization in the Northeast because of you, our members who give of your time and talents. Ted Nutall and Mel Stabin return to the
Landgrove  INN

Mel Stabin and Ted Nuttall enjoyed being in Vermont at the Landgrove Inn so much that they both are set to return in 2012. Ted is scheduled for June 11-13 while Mel is coming July 9-13. For those folks that missed the last workshops, this next year they get another chance.

"Both of these artists put on the best workshops I have been to and the responses from other participants have all been very positive! Before I took Ted Nuttalls worhshop this past summer I had never painted a portrait and now I am not affraid of the subject. He is a great teacher and fun too! As for Mel Stabin, he is really great to watch doing a demo. It is inspiring to see how he makes his subject look just right with just a few strokes of his brush. Both teachers are very helpful and if any one wants an exciting learning experience they can go to www.landgroveinn.com to sign up."
