President's Message
Can you believe it? Here we are so close to the holidays and a brand New Year in just six weeks! It is such a great time of year so full of hope, well wishes, and reflections of the year past. And a good year it has been for the VWS and I hope for each of you as a member of this grand organization.
I have been noticing with great joy that more and more of you are getting involved and participating in VWS related happenings. We had a sold out workshop with artist, Ted Nuttall who sparked some of the most positive feedback we have ever received. I've seen increased turnouts at our meetings and events, and a record number of submissions for the Chandler Exhibition this fall. I have met members I have never seen before!
Isn't it wonderful to have a reason to gather and celebrate one another and our creative works. I am especially excited about the VWS HUB initiative. This is, without a doubt, the biggest endeavor ever taken on by this Society with the most far-reaching impact. The intent is simple, to bring the opportunity of fellowship, sharing, collaboration and education down to a local level so all can easily enjoy and benefit. My heart felt thanks to those who have stepped up to get this initiative off the ground. It is a top priority of the VWS Board this coming year. We will be taking it slowly to make sure we are providing the right offerings and making the right decisions in order to sustain and build momentum that is so exciting to see.
We continue to strive to make your membership experience in the VWS worthy of your time and your commitment. If you have any suggestions on how we can further improve your experience, please let me know. Just call or email me anytime, I would love to hear from you.
Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season,
Jan Olmstead

2011 Annual Fall Meeting...Great Fun!!!
With the "house full", VWS members exercised their privilege of membership by casting their vote in the election of four Board positions, see the details below. Always a favorite is the sharing of recent works of art which were spread throughout the large and accommodating conference room of the Quechee Country Club.
From left to right: Rosemary Abele, Lisa Beach and Patrick Kennedy;
Holbein, our new partner, was well represented with John Bates of the Black Horse Art Supply in Burlington; and Mat Hopper, a family member of the Hopper owned Holbein US distributorship located in Winooski, Vermont. Matt gave a presentation on Holbein products and both presented us with two great art prizes valued over $500 for the always anticipated raffle.
Probably the most popular part of the meeting was when Director of Exhibitions Rebecca Gottesman led a challenging and fun exercise when everyone was given paints, brush and paper and they went at it.
Nice job Rebecca! And thanks to all those who helped to put on a great meeting.
In the words of our members:
"I haven't attended a meeting in a long, long time.
So many terrific people doing such a great job.
It was great to see the very few people I actually know, and to put faces to those I
have met by phone. The meeting and presentations were all so ' Right On ', and that lunch was certainly delicious!"
Alice Sciore, Middlebury/Rutland Hub
"Great Fall meeting- I think everyone enjoyed it. I did!" Cynthia Crawford, White River Hub

Volunteers of the Year
The volunteer of the year award is the most important award that the VWS can bestow on one of its members. The VWS Board of Directors chooses the recipient they feel has either significantly contributed to enhancing the experience of membership in the VWS or has worked to strengthen the Society's operational infrastructure thus impacting future success.
This is the first year this award is being given to two individuals who both embody the true spirit of the VWS--Pamela Dexter and Lynn Hoeft. Because of their willingness to participate and contribute, both Pam and Lynn were VWS member participants in the 2011-2012 Planning Session held last January. Additionally, both serve as Hub Point People, Pam in New Hampshire and Lynn in Brattleboro. Their respective hubs are the most active and successful in bringing VWS members together on a local level.
Pam and Lynn's work has furthered the VWS mission of providing opportunities for participation, education and fellowship and of promoting the awareness and appreciation of watercolor to their communities through local exhibitions. Many thanks to Lynn and Pam for their enthusiasm and dedication to the Vermont Watercolor Society. Next month's Snippets will bring you member profiles of Pam and Lynn.

Retiring VWS Board Members
LOIS MACUGA, TREASURER 2009-2011 has been our treasurer for the past three years. Her contributions are many including moving from a simple list report of our finances to a spreadsheet format making use and interpretation so much easier. Lois has single handedly kept track of our workshops/meetings lists and payments. Always gracious and generous, Lois has offered her home on a number of occasions to hold the VWS board meetings and she with her husband Henry have sponsored both the Still Life and Landscape awards presented at our Annual Awards Exhibition. Lois is a wonderful painter, belongs to several prestigious art organizations and has won a number of awards including Best Landscape in 2010 at our own Awards Exhibition. DIANE BELL, DIRECTOR COMMUNICATIONS 2008-2011 was the first person to sit on the BOD as Director of Communications and for the past four years has been responsible for its development into a vital and essential board seat. Diane brought us into the 21st century by moving from a very expensive paper newsletter to an electronic newsletter, Snippets. She helped to design our branding, which is now incorporated throughout all communications. Diane is such a prolific painter and makes full use of the attributes that watercolor offers. She lives in Weston with her partner Roy and is very active in the art community in Weston and beyond. This past summer she opened her own seasonal home gallery. We are all grateful for your combined 7 years of dedicated service and contribution to the Vermont Watercolor Society. |

MEET OUR NEW PARTNER
It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists.

The Chandler OPENING Claudia Carl, Director of Education and Programs It was not the best day with rain off and on, but the group that attended the opening was able to enjoy a wide range of artist styles and techniques. The Chandler Hall has a great space to show off this collection of wonderful works from 50 VWS artists. We were able to hear a bit from each of the artists which allowed the guests a greater understanding of each painting. It was very interesting to look at a painting and form an impression, and then see it differently after hearing from the artist.
Harald Aksdal Thanks to Rebecca Gottesman who worked hard to put this show together. This was a wonderful exhibit. The exhibit ran until November 12.

Space will be limited so please reply to me at ltcummin@uvm.edu asap - first come, first served. I will get back to you with confirmations, directions and other details. Lynn Cummings | more from the Burlington/St. Albans Hub...
On Wednesday, October 5, about seven of us met at the top of Mt. Philo in Charlotte to paint on a spectacularly sunny day. Facing west, we were overlooking the patchwork of farmers' fields in the foreground, across Lake Champlain, and then the Adirondack Mountains made up the dramatic back ground. The clouds in the sky were ever changing and the trees in the distance were beginning to show their fall colors. Some of us sketched and others painted in watercolor. Some finished their paintings, others got a good start, and all of us had a lovely day out together in a most magnificent setting. As an unexpected bonus, we had a lively and admiring audience of school kids. We will certainly add this site to our list for future plein air painting opportunities. On November 7, Artists' Mediums in Williston hosted a framing workshop from 6:30-9:30. Topics included mounting, frame assembly, and those important professional touches. This activity was fully enrolled and everyone learned some new techniques. New Hampshire Hub The NH hub's second meeting Oct 1, 2011 was held at Kilton Public Library, West Lebanon, NH. Attendance more than doubled! We confirmed the details for the Alumni Hall & Arts Center show in Dec., and we brainstormed future Plans. - Workshop: Isobel Cochran will provide a day-long workshop, date TBD.
- Field Trip: A Backroom Tour of the Hood Gallery. Details to follow.
- Plein Air August 10-12, Silver Lake, Harrisville, NH. Open to all Hubs. Attend any or all three days.
- Open House showing work from the three days Sunday Aug 12th 4-6pm to which the community will be invited.
- Our hub goal is to establish quarterly meetings to support increased attendance & make connections between artists. Next meeting is Jan 4th in combination with pick up of paintings from the Alumni Hall show.
- Time & place to follow. Thanks again to Everett Webber for reserving the Library for our meeting.
