| | For Wasily Alice Sciore
When I called for directions to her studio, and was told it was "a block north " of the junctions of Routes 4 and 100 near Killington Mountain, I knew that Alice Sciore was not Vermont born.
But that was just a verbal vestige of her former city living. Today, Alice is a confirmed and permanent transplant from her hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey .
It all began back in the 1960's when she was a regular, "ski bum" (her words) on the Killington trails. After repeated visits, she looked around, decided to quit her job, and make the big move north. Coincidentally, there was a secretarial position open with the mountain management business. She sat for the interview and at the end, they asked, "Okay, now tell us what you really do." And that was the start of her career in verdant Vermont. Alice admitted she was a professional graphics designer and Killington needed someone to design and paint ski trail signs. They not only gave her a job, but an office and a place to live, and Alice ultimately moved to Killington and expanded her work doing brochures and logos for other businesses.
Being interested and trained in art was not a sudden discovery to Alice. Music and art were strong in her family when they emigrated from Italy, and her parents were eager to instill that same appreciation in their only child. Alice remembers going to movies as a very young child, and trying to replicate what she saw on the screen as drawings. She also remembers going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and being dragged to the Early American wing, described by Alice as very boring , but she was so stimulated that her parents bought her a book on early American art. After attending school in New Jersey, she enrolled in the Jamesine Franklin School of Professional Art on Park Avenue, and worked as a graphics designer . She took evening classes at the Art Students League for two years.
Alice has tried and succeeded in all artistic areas; watercolors, sculptures, pastels, and oils. She thinks that "making friends" with the watercolor paints is the way to allow the creative juices to flow. She carries a design or picture in her head and gets wonderful satisfaction in seeing it replicated so that others can share her vision. She did try her hand at marble sculpture at the Carving School in Rutland but found that marble was resistant to her charms of eliciting art from a rock. Because of this love of the flow, she has temporarily stepped back from her wood sculptures, as obviously influenced by Louise Nevelson, because it entailed taking her favorite butternut chunk of wood to a woodworker who would do the basic cutting, and then return it to her to finish. Alice now tries to elicit the same effect through her watercolors.Though she usually works alone, she is illustrating a friend's poetry. Watercolors are easy, says Alice. Easy to grab up a bag of stuff and go " into the field." Plein Air is not in her phrasebook.
Alice's advice to emerging artists based on her own experience, is to be extremely self disciplined, take the work seriously and realize that it is a gift coming from within. She also advises to take chances, embark on new discoveries, and above all, socialize.
Remembering Duke Alice Sciore
Alice is a co-founder of the Killington Arts Guild, a "signature member" of the Vermont Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Vermont Arts Council, the Vermont Crafts Council, and the Chaffee Art Center.
Alice is presently recuperating from a broken neck as a result of an auto accident last winter. We all wish you well, Alice.
