The 2011 Spring Event  "The Creative Process"

Claudia Carl

OUR FIRST SPRING EVENT...a really fun and educational happening!

Our first Spring Event (art related activities and no business meeting), THE CREATIVE PROCESS, was held at the beautiful Lake Morey Inn in Fairlee, VT.  Members and guests enjoyed a day filled with  art work sharing  and lots of valuable tips.

Members  set their paintings around the room to share with the group while Maurie Harrington, Diane Bell, Rob O'Brien and Don Dalton talked about the "creative process" used to produce their displayed paintings.

Our guest vendor, Neil Dixon, owner of Yankee Imaging, gave us some great advice about photographing our work for exhibition submissions using digital cameras. He  talked about the most popular printers and the best papers to use when reproducing our images.

Amanda Amend talked about the new "hub" initiative and is excited about the enthusiasm and progress within the individual hubs to date. (See the hub news below.)

Keynote Speaker

Tony Conner

Featured in the 2011 book of

100 Artists of New England

Our keynote speaker was our own Tony Conner who entertained the group with a great talk about his transition from the corporate world to becoming a full-time professional artist.

From his Bennington, Vermont studio, Tony's art career is a multi-faceted venture that includes creating and selling fine art paintings, creating commissioned architectural illustrations, and teaching a variety of watercolor painting and drawing classes.

Call to Volunteers

Amanda Amend

It's true that many hands make light work, and we do need YOU!  Even if you feel that you don't have the expertise, your help will make a big difference.  We are all learning as we go and helping each other along the way.  Currently, VWS needs you in these areas:

Treasurer:  Lois Macuga is stepping down as treasurer at the end of this year, and we are converting from paper bookkeeping to QuickBooks.  We will hire professional help as needed, so you will have both Lois' support and the help of a bookkeeper.  Please join us as Treasurer on the Board of Directors-- you'll love working with this wonderful group of fellow artists.  Since this is a Board position, your nomination will be voted on in the fall business meeting, and then you will have time to learn the ropes.

Grafton Show hanger:-one more person to help hang the show on Monday, July 18th.  The time frame is from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on that day.  Take down: We also need another set of hands to help take down the show on August 1.

THANK YOU!  Please contact Amanda Amend at (802) 652-9893 or amanda.amend@gmail.com .

Brattleboro Hub:

The Brattleboro Hub met for a second time and are continuing their plans for a local exhibition in July, at the Historic Latchis Theatre.

The Brattleboro  hub is preparing for a group show at the historic Latchis Theatre in downtown Brattleboro. We will be displaying paintings there for the month of July, beginning with a reception during Gallery Walk on

WRJ Hub:

There were 13 attendees who gathered on a rainy afternoon at Judy Laliberte's house in Quechee on May 15.  An impressive pot luck lunch left everyone fat and happy for the informal meeting.   Nancy Dean began by announcing that the "Penny Lane Painters" will be showing their work at the Hotel Coolidge in June.  The opening will be on White River's "First Friday", June 3.  Lois Macuga will be opening a show in June as well, at the Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm.

The group then discussed what they would like to do within the hub.  Would the group want to get together for "paint outs" or activities like that?  Some did not find any value in painting as a group and consider themselves more as studio painters than plein air painters.  Others expressed a desire to paint with others in areas they might not feel comfortable.  An email list based on the Upper Valley Odanaksis Painters group model might work best. If someone plans to paint on a certain day, he/she could send out a group email to hub members inviting any and all to join them.

The group plans to continue these informal get-togethers for pot lucks or picnic lunches on a seasonal basis. A suggestion was made that the group pick an aspect of watercolor painting to discuss during our get-togethers, and the group could share how they address that subject.  Rob O'Brien volunteered to give a mat-cutting demo.  Cindy Crawford volunteered to do a demo on preparing digital images of artwork for use in juried shows.  She also asked the group for feedback about the VWS website and issues related to receipt of emails or the newsletter from the society .

Nancy Dean will host the next hub get-together at her studio in Norwich on August 14.  Bring a picnic lunch and a painting to discuss.

If you haven't heard from your Hub Point Person yet, feel free to contact him/her with ideas of what you would like to do:
