A small group from the Brattleboro Hub met on April 3, for a potluck and discussion at Lynn Hoeft's home. The artists' main concerns included: finding small venues for a regional open shows. (Several people promised to work to find a venue in the community for an exhibit later in the summer); finding ongoing support for artists' development as professional artists; how to (and how not to) approach a gallery; digital issues (members who aren't computer savvy need help getting good photos and transferring them to discs for entry into shows); how to make member pages; how to price work fairly and consistently. Everyone was in favor of getting together to paint even more often than they already do. The Brattleboro Hub has scheduled the next meeting for early May.
As you read in the news from the Brattleboro Hub, local activity is starting, and you will soon receive an email from your Hub Point Person, if you haven't already. This is an exciting time in the VWS. In addition, you will be receiving a letter through the mail with more information about the Hubs.

Kilda McKeever | |
 | | Isobel Cochran |
Instead, she was drawn to drawing."I never played with dolls," said Isobel Cochran as she sat in her home-based studio in Hanover, NH.
With her delicate lyrical Irish lilt, Isobel recounted her passage through life. Her delicacy is reflected in her work; tranquil rural scenes, quaint English villages and glorious flowers. She has been back in Hanover, since 1994, and joined the Vermont Watercolor Society as soon as it was opened to non-Vermont residents. She became a Signature member within a year. Isobel plans on assisting with the VWS goal of establishing smaller local hubs in the Upper Valley area.
Isobel was born and raised in Dublin. She was always interested in art, and when she was 16, with strong maternal support, she enrolled in evening art classes. During the day, she further developed her artistic bent by working at a carpet factory designing rugs. Not just any rugs. These were handmade 40' rugs, big enough for the Irish Embassy and for the Catholic Church. The designs reflected the inimitable works of Adams architecture ceilings. The church rug designs were crosses taken directly from the Book of Kells that Isobel consulted in the museum that holds them.
Cochran's first foray to the United States was when her husband David came to Hanover for graduate computer work at Dartmouth. What began as a two-year stint stretched into five when David went on to get his doctorate. His work took him to the Chicago area where Isobel joined the Deerpath Art League and eventually became its president. It was there that she was awarded Best in Show from the Illinois Watercolor Society for her painting, "Peace like a River."
 | | "Peace Like a River" |
Isabel's watercolor painting was put on the back burner as she raised her two children. However, even then, she kept her hand in the artistic world taking expression through calligraphy. Her excellence in watercolor was echoed in her calligraphy. She did all the calligraphy for a catalogue listing Ronald Reagan's antiques in use in the White House. During this time, Isobel also painted house portraits on commission.
Her subjects are often rural scenes with barns and rivers, as well as small European cities and harbors. Cornwall, England is an especially favorite inspirational area. Isobel said her cool palette may change to a warmer one after recently spending some time in Italy with her husband. Venice is the epitome of reflected urban water, but the southern climates call for a rosier palette.
 | | "After the Rain" Plockton, Scotland |
Isobel considers herself a tight, slow painter with a tendency to use cool colors with violet overtones. It takes about a week to complete a watercolor. She preps her 300 pound cold press (usually Arches) paper by stretching it. She is attracted to water reflections and uses a glazing technique which takes several layers to get the glowing effect that she reaches. Her favorite tools are scraper brushes she uses to soften the hard edges.
 | | "Harbor Reflections" |
The unique qualities of Yupo art paper have caught Cochran's attention. Yupo is a non absorbant synthetic paper which allows the jewel tones of watercolors to remain quite brilliant. Yupo can be rinsed and erased with ease. Isobel showed (the author) a painting of a dark green marsh scene with a pure white egret standing in the water. The egret was produced by erasing the dark green back to the white, with no smudges or bleeding. She likes the idea of a looser approach to the pictures.
 | | "Egret" |
Isobel's output is quite prolific as evidenced by the number of paintings decorating her house and in her studio. She says that she does about 100 paintings a year. She enjoys plein air painting, but doesn't usually paint that way. Instead, she likes to go on site and sketch her subjects. She then takes numerous photos to be used as reminders as she works. She does all her own matting and framing and prefers using metal frames over wood. They are less distracting to the paintings. She sells most of her work and has many repeat buyers from around the world, though with the global slump, especially in her native Ireland, sales have slowed a bit.
Not all the award ribbons in Isobel's studio are a result of her paintings. She has golden retrievers who regularly win prizes for obedience training trials. Though she had one picture of her dogs in her studio, she prefers the landscapes and does not paint other peoples' animals.
Cochran's considerable body of work can be seen at her very attractive website www.isobelcochran.com; she can be contacted at isobelcochran@gmail.com.

Barbara J. Pafume has been invited to do some paintings of the new F35 Joint Strike Fighter, a fighter aircraft being developed and tested by the US, United Kingdom and several other countries which will ultimately replace the F16. Two paintings, which may be seen on her website www.art-in-vermont.com were exhibited at the Vermont Aerospace & Aviation Association Open House event recently. One painting has already sold. Twenty percent of that sale and all other paintings, prints, cards sold at Four Seasons Studios, through Memorial Day, will be donated to Veteran's Affairs to assist in transitional housing for veterans and their families.
-Barbara taught two full-day workshops for Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester and is scheduled for eight all-day classes there in July and August, Mondays, 9:30 - 4:30.
