| Proteus - nearing 100 installations |
The world-wide population, in countries as diverse as Russia, Dubai and Greece, is rapidly approaching 100 machines. The continuing improvement programme saw modifications in 2008 to the PLC controlling the line which resulted in the maximum speed being increased to 30m per minute.
To help maintain consistent film tension at these higher speeds the Proteus is now also equipped with a pneumatic film mandrel. Further aids to the productivity of this popular line now includes a pre-loading facility and sheet stacker. The user-friendly PLC control also has a modem link for remote diagnostics. |
| Conversion equipment investment |
The D & K Group continues its investment programme with the installation at D & K Europe's Redditch factory of a re-furbished Cameron slitter. It was re-conditioned at the Group's central engineering shop in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, where they run several similar machines and have many years experience of configuring machines to suit D & K's markets. Robin French, M.D., and Richard Ware, a senior D & K slitter operator, visited Elk Grove Village last autumn to check progress and for Richard to gain experience running Cameron slitters.
Ron Pugh, Production Manager, believes the shear slitting system employed by the Cameron will enable D & K to convert thicker polyesters more efficiently than the razor set-up most of the current machines use." We coped with a big increase in demand for polyester film last year by importing pre-cut rolls from D & K in America" he said "But with the current weakness of sterling it makes sense to do this work ourselves and this acquisition will help us do that". This investment follows the recent installation of a high speed Jenner-Jahn convertor in Elk Grove Village.

| 125 miron Black film |
After a number of years of unavailability, D&K can once again offer a Black polyester encapsulating film to the market. In a 125 micron construction, this film was widely used in the past as a backing for portfolio work in markets ranging from glamour modelling to architectural presentations. These applications still exist to some degree but have been overtaken by its use for rollable graphics and as an end sheet for manuals, catalogues, etc. Richard Bolton, Application Specialist at D&K, said "Manufacture and sales of such specialised films are always vulnerable to cost-cutting somewhere along the supply chain, but D&K remains committed to the presentation market in total and is determined to increase its offering to help the trade expand activities to try and offset the general economic downturn". |
