Another fantastic concert season is wrapping up, with our final show to follow the Fall Festival on Saturday, October 30.

This season saw the successful launch of our Luxury Lawn Seats, and the expansion of the season to October.  We had some awesome bands - we got more "I loved them!" comments on U Neek Flavur than any other band we've ever showcased - and branched out musically this season.

Planning is already underway for the 2011 season, and we'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have your feedback!  Was there a band that you thought was rockin', or one that put you to sleep?  Want a little more variety in your food vendors?  Thought the Luxury Lawn Seats are a keeper or a bust?  Good or bad, we want to hear your feedback.  We would love to have band suggestions, and if there's a musical genre that we're missing, we want to know!
croquetnowCroquet Now A Reality
By Donna K. Britsch

The origins of croquet are a little sketchy, but may have started in France, England or Ireland depending upon the source.  According to Tom Anderson of Tega Cay, croquet started in Tega Cay.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

For the past two years enthusiastic Anderson and a group of Tega Cay residents who were introduced to the game of golf croquet have been rallying for a croquet court in the city.  "Tom Anderson was told more than once that there was no way that there would ever be a croquet court at the Tega Cay Golf Course, but here we are," Mayor George Sheppard told a group of over 150 croquet players and their family and friends on Saturday.  "Tom and his fellow croquet players worked hard and made this happen."

In a special ceremony and ribbon cutting on Saturday, September 11th not only were those involved with the tragic 9-11 incident remembered by those attending the opening of the Croquet Court, but it was an afternoon for Champaign toasts to the opening of the only public croquet court in York County.

With dignitaries such as SC Representative Ralph Norman, Gene Young, President of the United States Croquet Association, the city's Mayor and City Council members Dervay, Hersey and Perkins, Tom Anderson and the Tega Cay Croquet Club enjoyed their success in opening the court.  "This was a pipe dream two years ago and now without spending a dime of the tax payers'
money, we have built the course, will pay it off in four years and will turn the income producing facility over to the city," Anderson said.  He is the founding father and President of the local club.

Robert Thomas of the York County Board of Tourism shared in the excitement over the facility.  "We will be marketing this in our overall tourism plans.  This will be an extra activity to offer groups meeting in the county and we hope to have croquet events here.  I am jacked up and excited," Thomas told the crowd dressed in the traditional white of croquet standards.

The crowd enjoyed lunch, croquet on the new course and a demonstration by Damon Bidenscope, a competitive player since the 70's.  He has served as captain of the USA team, held several national titles, and competed as far away as Australia.

The sport can be played by everyone young and old.  It combines close communication with the strategy of gold, billiards and chess.  To join the club, check out www.tegacaycroquet.com  or email tegacaycroquet@comporium.net for more information.
braxtonTega Cay Unites for Dravet Syndrome
By Kirsten Gordon

It was dark and early when I pulled into the coffee shop on Saturday, September 25, to get warm brew for the volunteers.  It was still dark when I arrived at the Knight's Stadium to meet them and start setting up the event.  I was very tired and a little chilly, but I kept thinking what a great day this was.

dravet

It all started when a friend and neighbor, Claudine Gutt asked me, "Do you think Misty Ried would mind if we organized a charity walk to benefit the Dravet Syndrome Foundation?"  Of course, Misty didn't 'mind' her friends, family, and neighbors rallying around her son, Braxton, to raise money so that much-needed research could be conducted about this catastrophic form of epilepsy.  The work began to create the event.

Over the coming months Carrie Shearin would help orchestrate the production of the event, Claudine and Treva Cannon would find sponsors and donors, Laura Lando and Kristie Benton helped organize, plan, and stuff bags, and all spread the word to increase the number of registered walkers and donations.

So, here we are at the Knight's Stadium on the morning of the walk.  Coffee in hand, I see nothing but smiles.  This is a labor of love, and the anticipation is palpable.  Laura points out the sun rise over the baseball field.

Soon, DJ Brownsound filled the air with bubbles from as he urged us to 'Blame it on the Boogie'.  Dravet purple balloons were yearned skyward and the Tega Cay fire truck ladder inched toward heaven.  Nikki, the Tega Cay K-9 unit, slobbered over walkers, and Mayor George Sheppard helped at the registration table.  Kids chased the bubbles, and adults caught up with their friends.

The Charlotte Knight's mascot, Homer, led the walkers on their one mile walk from his ATV.  As the walker completed their lap they were greeted with goodies from Panera Bread, Starbucks, and Chik-Fil-A.  Kids could ride the carousel, build bird houses from Lowe's, and get their faces painted by the Bayada Nurses.  The raffle prizes were being announced all through the morning while the silent auction items were getting bids.

The event was a success! With 112 walkers and over $12,000 raised for the Dravet Foundation, the volunteers could enjoy the results of their labor.  Misty, Ben, and Braxton Ried are very grateful to the support they have received.  It means so much to them that people learn more about Dravet.

The Dravet Syndrome Foundation is a volunteer-based non-profit organization dedicated to aggressively raising research funds for Dravet syndrome and related conditions while assisting afflicted individuals and families.  To learn more, go to www.dravetfoundation.org.

baxterBaxter Village Connects to the
Carolina Thread Trail

A group gathered outside the Baxter Village Library, at 7 a.m. Saturday September 18, to celebrate the opening of a new trail at Baxter Village, and dedicate the trail system as a part of the Carolina Thread Trail.

baxter trail

The Carolina Thread Trail is a regional network of greenways and trails, which is planned to reach 15 counties across North and South Carolina.

Donuts were served, and a tractor ride brought the group of about 30 trail enthusiasts down to the Gardenia Road trailhead, where they began a hike of the newly completed section of trail.

The singletrack dirt trail winds a twisty, hilly route through the woods between neighborhoods, and makes its way all the way down to the Catawba River. Interesting features along the way include a large wooden bridge, a stone "council ring" around a large fire pit, and a wooden observation deck near the river's edge.

Less than a mile downstream from the Wylie Dam and the planned site of Tega Cay's Catawba Park, this end of the trail crosses a a planned section of the Carolina Thread Trail which will connect Tega Cay to Baxter Village, and beyond, across the Catawba River to Rock Hill's Riverwalk Trails.

This event adds another to the large network of communities connected by greenways along the Thread Trail. Future additions will be made official next month, with events at the Nation Ford Greenway and in McAdenville along the South Fork River, both planned for October 9th.

See more photos and a map of the trails at Tega Cay Talk.
