Wickets Anyone?

wicketsJoin the Tega Cay Croquet Club on Saturday, September 11, at 11 a.m. for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the newly constructed, professional croquet court located at the Tega Cay Golf Club.

Tom Anderson, President of the Tega Cay Croquet Club, will welcome everyone to the festivities before turning things over to several National USCA Champions who will be on hand to provide demonstrations. "This has been several years in the making", remarked Anderson.  "I first brought the idea of croquet to the Parks and Recreation committee a little over two years ago.  In that time, we have grown from just a few of us showing others the sport, to a 100 member club", he added.  "This entire group has done a wonderful job", said Charlie Funderburk, Operations Director for the City of Tega Cay.  "They have been enjoying limited time on one of our soccer fields for the better part of two years, so it's nice to see they have finally been able to get a permanent home, in a much more suitable location".

While many may view croquet as a sport for the older generations, they couldn't be more wrong.  "It is definitely not the game you played growing up in your front yard", remarked Funderburk.  "It is a game of skill and strategy, and the club has done a wonderful job introducing the sport to many different generations".  "It's a sport that parent and child can compete in together", added Anderson.

A buffet lunch will be available at the Pavilion, during the Grand Opening, at a cost of $10.00 per person with several door prizes awarded.   A cash bar will also
be open. Tickets for the lunch may be purchased at the club house Pro Shop or from Al Huddy (547-2459) or any member of the Club Board. The court will be open until 5:00PM on the 11th. The event is free to watch the demonstrations, or to try your hand at hitting the wickets at this first class facility.

As many of you may remember from the article in the Tega Cay Compass Magazine, sweet Tega Cayan, Braxton Ried, was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy called  "Dravet Syndrome" in April of 2009.  Braxton has an infectious smile and loves to laugh and dance. At 7 months of age Braxton was airlifted to Levine Children's Hospital due to a prolonged uncontrollable seizure. Since then, his seizure activity has increased. On any given day he can have up to 50 seizures. While most are brief, many require medication to stop and result in extended hospitalization.

At 16 months Braxton was diagnosed with an intractable form of epilepsy called Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy, or Dravet Syndrome. Dravet Syndrome is a rare and catastrophic form of epilepsy for which there currently is no cure. Braxton will not outgrow these seizures.

Fall Sports Gets the Green Lightgreenlight

greenlightWe would like to thank everyone who registered to participate in sports this fall season with Tega Cay Parks and Rec.  This fall we have over 1,600 participants playing in baseball, football soccer, softball, men's softball, women's softball and adult kickball.  It is no easy feat finding enough field space to house all of our activities.  We would like to thank the Fort Mill School District and the Baxter YMCA. Without their generosity we would be unable to fulfill our field space needs for the fall season.

As the beginning of games near, we'd like to take a moment to remind everyone of a few small, but VERY IMPORTANT things.  As you all know parking can get a little crazy around our parks.  We ask that you take advantage of carpooling situations when possible and please park in the DESIGNATED PARKING SPOTS ONLY (illegal parking may result in a ticket).

As a program we want to do our best to create a fun and positive atmosphere for your child and family.  We ask that you help do your part by being respectful to all umpires/officials, volunteer coaches and other families.  Please also keep in mind that tobacco and alcohol use at our facilities is prohibited.  Use of these products will result in removal from the facility.  We look forward to another great season, thank you for your support.  See you out on the fields!

The "New" Senior Games
By George Fiegel

newseniorYes, The Senior Games are new this year.  We're introducing team sports.  That means tournaments and teams playing for gold, silver and bronze.  Anyone over 50 years of age can play in the Senior Games.  This year participants can play in games of Bocce Ball, Golf, Croquet, Bowling, Corn Hole, as well as 6 other sporting events.  The tournament play times for the week will be coordinated with other team sports for the Senior Games.  The Senior Games emphasize participation by all seniors, fellowship, healthful living, and competition.

To register and participate in the senior games, people must pay $15.  Guests are invited to the dinner and dance for $10. This is to defray expenses for the Dinner/Dance and equipment use.  For their one registration fee they will be able to play some or all 11 sports in the games.  Participation in golf and bowling will require additional playing fees.  The games will be played October 4-8.  On October 7 from 7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. there will be a Health Fair at the Glennon Center.  Later that night, winners and all the participants will be recognized at a Dinner/Dance.

One of the reasons for having the games is that we want to recognize people who are doing better against their own age group.  So, 2-person teams (men's and women's) to be organized by age.  Team players of different ages will be competing at higher group.  The age groups are: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99, and 100+.  If needed, age groups will be combined for the purpose of having enough teams to establish a clear bronze, silver, and gold winner for a particular age group.  The results and summaries of the scores will be presented Friday evening.

Sport Profile: Tega Cay Croquet Club

sportprofileThe Tega Cay Croquet Club was formed in January 2009 and has been meeting the third Monday of the month to play golf croquet at Lookout Park in Tega Cay.

The club secured a loan in November 2009 to construct a full size croquet court close to the pavilion at the Tega Cay Golf Club. Construction started in mid-April and the court will be ready for play by the end of August.

We currently have some 90 Tega Cay resident and non-resident members. Membership at the original charter membership rate is available until September 11th.

Annual charter membership rates are $120 per person for Tega Cay residents and $200 for non-residents. After September 11th the resident and non-resident rates will be increased to $150 and $225 respectively.

Children (under 21) and grandchildren of members play free of charge. The minimum age requirement to play is 8 years old, and children 16 years and under must be accompanied by a playing adult.

Non-member play is available at a greens fee of $15 per person for a two hour play period. Play may continue beyond two hours if no other players are waiting to play.
The new court will be available for open play every day, apart from weather and maintenance related closures. The club will continue to lay on organized play days, and plans to introduce quarterly tournaments.
