JenCoach Profile: Jen Stalford

It's certainly not a mystery that many parents become coaches because they want to guide their own children in the sport that they loved and played themselves.  However, Jen Stalford's attraction to coaching was largely driven by her desire to provide guidance and attention equally amongst all players.

"I noticed some coaches primarily focused on their elite players and the other players were considered secondary. I take this 'volunteer' position very seriously. My goal is for every child to improve as an individual and as a team player over the course of a season, both physically and mentally. The score is not the most important thing," says Jen.

Jen, who currently coaches U8 Coed Soccer and U12 Girls Soccer, has been coaching for four years and believes strongly that sports are more than learning a set of physical skills.  "There are so many positive values in sports that transfer to life skills. [As a coach] I judge myself all the time ... did the kids have fun, learn, improve and still want to play soccer? Making sure every child realizes they are valued team member is critical," says Jen.

When asked about a most memorable moment, Jen is unable to point to just one moment.  "There have been moments both on and off the playing field! Of course the first team coaching by myself was awesome. In Fall '08, as an assistant, our U10 team won first place in the league but that was a whole season of experiences."

"Really it's the little moments that make it worthwhile . . . When a player gave me a homemade Mother's Day card thanking me for being her coach.  . . . When the defense or offense first 'click.' . . . When the kids can laugh, learn, and move on to improve after making what they realize could have been a better play.  . . . When I don't have to say anything because each kid knows what they should be doing during the game.  . . . When someone is hurt and players show compassion and empathy.  . . . After a win when the kids say 'good job or good game' with smiles instead of showing off.  . . . Or after we lose they congratulate the other team with a good attitude.  Each team has been rewarding ... Poison Ivy, Purple Panthers, Emeralds, Dragonflies, Red Monkeys, and now the Cyclops (U12 girls) & Bobcats (U8 coed)!" continues Jen.

According to Jen, the most personally rewarding part of coaching in Tega Cay is being able to interact with the kids on and off the field. "The best thing about coaching is when a child that I previously coached runs up to me and gives me a giant hug or yells to me from across a field saying 'Hi Coach Jen'. No matter where I am, or no matter where any of us adults are, we should live as if a child is watching and act accordingly. Coaching in Tega Cay has allowed my family to meet and become friends with families that we would not have met otherwise. There are a lot a wonderful kids and parents in Tega Cay," concludes Jen.

As a former Varsity High School and College Volleyball and Softball player, Jen also continues to play co-ed soccer and has passed on her passion of sports to her children.  Nathan, 11, currently plays Small Fry Football; Rachael, 10, plays U12 Rec Soccer and Crossfire Travel Soccer; and Nicholas, 10, plays U8 Soccer and Flag Football. Sophia, 5, supports her siblings from the sidelines.

EmilyTCPR Profile: Emily Jaeckli

As the unofficial "Secretary" of Tega Cay Parks & Recreation (TCPR), Emily Jaeckli's contributions to the TCPR Committee reaches far beyond taking notes and providing meeting minutes.  She also oversees the Summer Concert Series and is a continuous voice for environmental issues, such as making recycling bins available at city events and acting as a "go green" voice in the development of Catawba Park.

Emily has been a member of the TCPR Committee for five years.  Emily joined the committee when a friend and former Committee Chairperson, Kelly Mayberry, pointed out that the committee had an opening.  "I'd been looking for a way to get involved in the community, and P&R seemed like the perfect fit," says Emily.

As the point person for the Summer Concert Series, Emily gives all the credit to Kim Bogert for masterminding the series.  According to Emily, her role is to work with the committee in picking and confirming the bands and vendors.  Due to budget constraints, the challenge going forward is to bring in more sponsorship dollars and cut cost.  "Basically, it'll be cheaper bands and more sponsors.  People love the concerts and I would hate to give them up," says Emily.

In addition to organizing the concerts, Emily was recently part of the Catawba Park strategy meetings.  "The most fun I've had on P&R is planning Catawba Park - being involved in the strategizing meetings, and coming up with the park concept was an absolute blast.  It's going to be so incredible when it's done - like nothing else in the area," says Emily.

According to TCPR Chairperson, Kim Bogert, "Emily is behind most of the success of P&R events ever since she joined the committee and we owe the 2009 concert series to her determination that it wasn't going down to budget cuts or even to another city committee!  But even more than events, she's got a huge philanthropic spirit and is always focused on making the world at large better with our efforts.  For example, with the 2008 sports equipment yard sale we were able to donate over $1,000 in money and gifts to the Children's Attention Home, and it was due to her commitment and energy for kids who are less fortunate.  She's also smarter and funnier than most people, so it's never boring when she's around!"

Director of Operations, Charlie Funderburk adds, "Emily has a great heart and works hard to really help drive the Parks & Recreation Committee.  Emily has also been a huge help in getting needed sponsors for events and our sports programs."

Emily has lived in Tega Cay eight years.  She and her husband, Rolf, moved here from Los Angeles.  Since moving to Tega Cay, they have had two children, Oliver, 6 and Mason, 3.  Emily is also expecting a child in March. Emily also runs her own business from home called Rightscenter. Rightscenter a database for film/TV rights to books.

catawbaCatawba Park Update

As reported in last month's newsletter, TCPR is spearheading efforts to raise money for the development of Catawba Park.  Initial money raised for Catawba Park will be used to build and develop 10 acres of park space, which will include three multi-fuctional fields that are desperately needed to accomodate youth recreational sports.

A fundraiser has been scheduled for September 30, to be held at Bruster's Ice Cream from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Please come out and support the future of our programs, by enjoying some ice cream, while insuring additional space for our entire community to play.

lpgaLPGA Tour Coming to Tega Cay

The City Council of the City of Tega Cay is pleased to announce that it is in negotiation with Special Events Unlimited (SEU) to bring an officially sanctioned Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event to Tega Cay. Following numerous visits to Tega Cay by LPGA officials, the LPGA has selected the Tega Cay Golf Club as an official tour event site for the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons. While specific dates and title sponsors are yet to be announced, initial plans call for a full field of professional golfers to compete for a total purse of over 1.1 million dollars in the Fall of 2010.

"This is a great opportunity for the City of Tega Cay, York County and the State of South Carolina" says Tega Cay City Manager Grant Duffield. "The initial projections show a several million dollar impact to our local economy".  Duffield says that the biggest beneficiaries of this event will be volunteer organizations in the area. "Our local charities will receive a portion of $200,000 for their charity".

SEU President Tommy Stines states that the LPGA is extremely excited about the Tega Cay venue, describing the course and conference facilities as ideal for the event. Stines says that "The Golf Channel will be televising the 4 day event. In addition there will be a Celebrity/am Tournament hosted by Tarheel basketball great James Worthy, as well as a traditional pre-tournament pro/am". With a field of 144 well recognized
professional golfers, Stines says he envisions the tournament will quickly become a mainstay on the LPGA schedule. "We anticipate this Tournament getting bigger and better every year".
