Beach & Swim Club:
More Than A Community Pool
If you're not a member of Tega Cay's Beach & Swim Center (BSC) or you haven't visited the center lately, there are a lot of changes that have taken place and even more on the horizon.
Amenities at the center include: · 8 lane Junior Olympic size swimming pool · Home of the Tega Cay Breakers · Kiddie Pool with raining umbrella and shaded picnic area · Expansive pool deck overlooking Lake Wylie · Beach area for swimming · Outdoor volleyball court · Picnic tables and grills · Playground · Access to walking trails · Gathering room · Snack Bar · Fitness Room that includes cardio equipment, Nautilus station, free weights. The Fitness Room is available for use from 5 a.m. - 10 p.m
Also available at the BSC are Swim Lessons, Water Aerobics classes, Pilates, Yoga, and Fitness Boot-camps.
According to Billie Taylor, Facility Manager, her goal is to continue growing and emphasizing the fitness component of the BSC. "In the near future, I'd like for us to be referred to and thought of as a Fitness & Pool Club. We are in the preliminary stages of expanding the fitness room, and creating more meeting space for groups such as Weight Watchers, and other fitness and nutrition workshops."
Carolina Pool Management offers seasonal (summer) swim lessons at the BSC. Skill overview includes water acclimation, the fundamentals of safety and stroke development. All swimming lessons take place at the BSC pool. This year, there are five sessions as follows: June 9-18, June 23-July2, July 7-16, July 21-30, Aug. 4-13. Registration deadlines are typically 4-5 days before each session begins. Private and semi-private lessons are available. Beginner lessons are available for children as young as three years old and more advanced stroke classes are available for children and adults. For more information on swimming lessons, you can contact the center or visit www.cpm-charlotte.com.
The BSC can be rented for hosting your next social gathering. The BSC provides the ideal space and backdrop for birthday parties, baby showers, or Graduation celebrations. Many businesses and organizations have also enjoyed the BSC for social gatherings and meetings. Last but not least the BSC can be rented for weddings.
On a more "for your information" note, residents may have noticed that the original sandy beach area has fallen victim to erosion. Staff is working with Duke Lake Management and our City Engineer to come up with a solution to revitalize this area for everyone's enjoyment. Staff hopes to begin modifications by the fall, if feasible. |

Carolina Ski Show Team: A Family Affair
As with many things related to recreation, Tega Cay is fortunate to be host and spectator to a unique sport, in a unique setting . . . the Carolina Show Ski Team. Every Friday night, June through August, (with a few exceptions) the Carolina Ski Show Team delivers a mouth dropping performance that involves both skill and "show" to spectators who gather at Windjammer Park. The Carolina Ski Show Team was formed in 1988 and has been performing shows at Windjammer Park since 1993. Shows involve both water skiing skills and "show" - including pyramids and ramp jumps. Currently there are 40 members, with ages ranging from 8 to 56 years of age. However, being a member of the Carolina Ski Show Team doesn't necessarily mean that you are a performing skier. " It's a family 'sport' that requires a lot of support," says Team Leader, Russ Frase. Members of the ski team include veteran performing skiers, boat drivers, parents sewing costumes, and inexperienced skiers learning new skills. According to Russ, show skiing involves teamwork . . . combining theater with water skiing. "There are 14 acts to make up a one hour show. Music, dancing, and costumes are all integrated into the show. Safety is always first; fun is second." Hundreds of off season hours are put in by team members with sewing, equipment maintenance, and the operation of the team. In the past, the shows have been free; whereas the team passed a bucket for funding. Last year the team asked for a $15 donation per vehicle. "Fill 'er up (the car with people) for $15. With limited parking at Windjammer this helped with our $30,000 budget," says Russ. Russ added that being a show skier requires a commitment to your teammates. "It is a real family affair," says Russ.
Proof positive is the Hines family. Jon and Susan Hines are the parents of 10 year old Connor and 13 year old McKenzie. While Connor (pictured below) and McKenzie (pictured right) are developing their show skiing skills, Dad and Mom provide support both on the water and off. Jon, who recently learned to ski, provides a lot of on-shore support and Susan contributes to the team by sewing costumes and providing assistance in the boat. The Hines family got involved in the ski team by attending a "learn to ski" workshop that was put on by the Carolina Ski Show Team. Now McKenzie is climbing pyramids and Connor is learning to slalom ski. Susan says that "being part of the team helps to build discipline and teaches them how to work with kids and adults; it teaches them how to compromise." While the Carolina Ski Show Team provides a chance for families to learn and develop their water skiing skills - the team also has its individual stars. One such performer is Jaclyn Whitt, who has been on the team for seven years. Jaclyn specializes in swivel, pyramids, and barefoot. She learned to ski at the young age of two; "quit for a while;" then picked the sport up again at age six. Russ adds, "Our team also likes to compete. In 2007, we traveled to Warsaw, Indiana to compete in the Division II National Show Ski Tournament, and in 2008, we traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to compete in the Southern Regional Tournament - where several skiers also took home trophies in individual skiing competition. Our jump team placed second and our team overall placed third."
According to Russ, ski shows are approximately one hour long, and include all types of skiing acts such as graceful waterskiing ballet, thrilling barefoot acts, and the whole team working together to build human pyramids. "Every year, our team hosts several local skiing tournaments, including the "New Years Day Barefoot Challenge." In addition, we also offer several "Learn to Ski" clinics throughout the summer for those who are interested in learning how to ski, to improve their skiing or just to learn something new! Our team has been featured in several articles and magazines, including Our State, Water Skier magazine, and several local publications," says Russ.
If you have any questions about Carolina Ski Show Team, would like to join in the fun, or if you are interested in having the team perform at your next party or venue, please contact Russ Frase, Show Director at 704-363-5534 or 803-548-4820. *Note: the last weekend in June, CSST will not be performing at Windjammer. They will be competing in the Southern Region Show Ski Championship in Tampa.

 TCPR Profile: Billie Taylor,
Beach & Swim Club Facility Manager
After working as an Administrative Assistant for a year at City Hall, Billie Taylor was offered the position of Facility Manager at the Beach and Swim Club (BSC). The BSC had only been opened for about two years at that time. Her mission was to increase membership, expand services, and the "not always popular task" of implementing policies and procedures.
"I was a little apprehensive when the position was first offered to me five years ago. Although I had been in positions as an office manager, I had never taken on managing a business and meeting budgets. In accepting the position, I came in with a lot of fresh ideas and changes," said Billie.
Billie recalls that sometimes the changes were not accepted with open arms. Most notable, Billie implemented the use of software and identification cards that help keep track of members. "The software and id cards allow us to make the pool and center a secure area where members only are using the facility. At first, this system created some resistance, but now everyone enjoys the safety and security that comes along with this type of system.
Some of the other amenities that Billie implemented were, wireless internet, late night swims for adults only, teen nights and bingo nights for younger children. "We also have fun Wednesday's that the children always enjoy and one of the greatest things I think that we have established is the Concession Stand. The members have enjoyed this so much the past couple years during their time at the pool," added Billie.
Also on Billie's list of improvements is the emphasis on the fitness room and related services. "We had our workout room inspected by a personal trainer and equipped with the cardio, free weights, and circuit units needed to achieve a full body workout from his recommendation. My future dream is to see our facility become a Fitness & Pool Club for residents. The use of the workout room has jumped by at least 75% the past few years. I visualize expanding this part of the club to three times its size to accommodate more members. I believe the feedback I have received from members that this could double our memberships," says Billie.
In reflecting about her role as the Facility Manager, Billie says that she "loves serving the residents of Tega Cay and the members of the Beach & Swim Center. It as a privilege. Being a resident of Tega Cay myself, it brings me great joy being a part of all the new things taking place in our city and looking forward to the future and what it holds." |
Healthy Swimming & Safety Tips
The Classic "PLEAs" of Water Safety
- Please remember to keep an eye on your child at all times. Remember, kids can drown in seconds and in silence.
- Please protect your child against sunburn by using a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and both UVA and UVB protection, and be sure to re-apply it after swimming. Even a few serious sunburns can increase the risk of getting skin cancer.
- Please put children who are not potty trained in swim diapers only. Regular diapers are not allowed in the pool.
- Please don't use air-filled swimming aids (such as "water wings") with children in place of life jackets or life preservers.
- Please, oh please, do not swim when you have diarrhea. This is especially important for kids in diapers. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick.
- Please do not swallow pool water. In fact, avoid getting water in your mouth.
- Please practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers.
- Please take your kids on bathroom breaks and check swim diapers often.
- Please change diapers in a bathroom and not at poolside.
- Please wash your child thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.

Community Watch
As school comes to an end, patterns of day-to-day life change. Families go on vacation. Kids go to summer camp. Unfortunately, during summertime vandalism in Tega Cay increases. With children and teens having more free time on their hands, this unfortunate trends takes place year after year.
As reported in the April newsletter, volunteers recently spent endless hours improving our parks. We ask for your help in keeping a watchful eye for vandalism or misuse of Tega Cay parks, equipment, and facilities. If you see anyone littering or misusing public equipment, please bring it to their attention that their behavior is inappropriate and of course if you witness any vandalism, please contact the Tega Cay Police Department. After all, it's not only a community in which we live, it's a community that is largely built using our tax payer money. Thanks for your support. | |
