Volunteers Renovate Runde Park "Volunteers are seldom paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are PRICELESS!" --author unknown Several volunteers rolled up their sleeves, brought out their shovels, heavy equipment, donated materials, worked a few muscle groups and made a difference.
The result. . . a new and improved Runde Park.
Joey Blethen, who helped coordinate the effort along with Bobby Evans, Todd Baker and Evan Helms, says that "a group of about 35 dedicated parents and coaches came out on February 21 to help out. The goal was simple. We want to provide the children in our program with the best playing fields possible." Efforts included:
-
New restrooms were constructed
-
New screening (small crushed rocks) were added to the outside of the fields
-
A new pitching mound was built
-
All humps were removed from Runde's Little League Infield
-
New sod was laid all around the Little League Field and the Advanced T-ball Field
-
Excess dirt was removed to ensure a smooth playing surface
-
New netting was hung for the batting cage
-
Bleacher seats were replaced and new bases were added.
While there is great appreciation for all the volunteers that came out, Joey points out the individual contributions of Mike Weisinger, Ed Davis, Nick Thomas, Tom Brown, Todd Baker, Evan Helms and Bobby Evans of Carolina Landscaping. "These guys came back after the official work day to help complete projects that were ongoing," says Joey. Other volunteers that came out include: Danielle Weisinger, Chris Griffin, Mike Miller, Dave Cessna, Keith Reddeck, Stacey Kuhn, Kim Brown, Peter Bogert, Kim Bogert, Jen Stalford, Emily Jaeckli, Rolf Jaeckli, J.P. Ippolitto, Chris Pattinson, Goff Finn, Dwane Burkhart, and James Stevens. (Note if your name was omitted please accept our apology and let us know. In hind sight, we should have established a sign-in sheet.) While the volunteers are proud to have completed so much work, they also would like to express the need to respect their efforts by calling on the entire community to help keep the field in good shape. "Thirty five friends of the program went above and beyond - donating hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to provide all the children in Tega Cay with the best baseball field possible. I now challenge the other 450 families participating in our baseball program to take pride in their generosity and keep this park looking great," says Joey. Tom Brown adds, "Those are our fields and our volunteers worked hard to give the citizens a better place to play. Treat them like you owned them and watch for people that do not respect our property." Specifically, Joey challenges the community to:
- Go above and beyond to pick up trash when it's lying on the ground, even if it's not yours.
- Ask people to NOT walk their dogs on the field.
- Not practice on fields when practice was cancelled by parks and rec. Practice was cancelled for a reason - to maintain the integrity of the fields.
- Report vandals to the police.
- Appreciate the efforts of the volunteers by taking pride in our program.

Coach Profile: Doug Cooley
Doug Cooley has been coaching Little League Baseball in Tega Cay since 2005. Like so many volunteer coaches, Doug started helping out and quickly became a coach as Leagues and need for coaches grew. "Coaching baseball in Tega Cay gives me the opportunity to be involved in teaching fundamentals and sportsmanship to young ball players. Seeing players come together and playing as a team is very satisfying," says Doug. Beyond the reward of teaching and mentoring young players, Doug got the added satisfaction of coaching the 2008 Minors All-Star Team. In coaching the All-Star Team, Doug provided his young players with a symbol that represented unity and strength. "My goal was to bring 12 players together, in a short period of time, to play solid as a rock. I painted a rock for our team with the player's names on it," said Doug. The rock which now resides in the Parks and Recreation office, serves as a reminder of a team successfully coming together as one solid unit. Doug continues to say, "I really enjoy seeing the boys improve on my team game to game. I also enjoy watching them as they continue to play at Tega Cay with other teams, season to season."

TCPR Profile: Kim Bogert
So how does one become Chairperson of TCPR? Kim Bogert jokingly claims that she got voted Chairperson when she missed only her second meeting in six years last December. "I didn't think they could do that!!" says Kim. In all seriousness, it's evident that Kim is Chairperson of TCPR because she is dedicated, results oriented, and respected by her committee counterparts and the Tega Cay City staff. According to Charlie Funderburk, Kim came to him six years ago with questions and suggestions on how to make TCPR more viable and holistic to the entire community. "After a few conversations, Kim realized that there were limitations to what 'we' could provide - mainly manpower and resources. Instead of complaining, she rolled up her sleeves and decided to help make a difference," says Charlie. And what a difference she has made. Most notably, Kim has developed and shaped the Summer Concert Series into what it has become today. "I'd say without her, we would not have the concert series, at least not to the degree that it is," say Charlie. Moreover, Charlie credits Kim for having a "big picture" approach. "She plans down the road - not just for youth sports, not just for the concert series, but for programs and events that will benefit the residents into the future. She recognizes and responds to the diversity of our residents. Without Kim's focus and drive, we wouldn't have expanded like we have," says Charlie. Kim has served on the committee for six years. According to Kim, being Chairperson involves doing "a lot of everything, but I couldn't get anything actually done without such a great committee, and such great staff partners (Charlie and Joey)," says Kim. Kim and her husband Peter have lived in Tega Cay for 13 years. They have one eight year old son, Alex, one dog, two kittens. In her "spare time," she works in Compensation (Human Resources) for Bank of America. |

Results From The Shamrock 5K
Several runners dressed in green, both competitive and novice, took off at 8 a.m. on March 14, for the Tega Cay Shamrock 5K and 1 Mile Leprechaun Family Friendly Run/Walk.
Despite the cool misty morning conditions, the event attracted over 100 registered participants. A percentage of the proceeds ($554.25) from the event was donated to Tega Cay Parks & Recreation by Recon Fitness Adventures. "It is a tough run" said Mary Lewis who has run the hilly golf course in the past. Runners from 10 years old to 68 years old completed the run in the cold drizzle of the morning.
This is the first of three Tega Cay 5K events planned for 2009 in which runners can accumulate points for participating in all 3 events. The next event is the Tega Cay Military Memorial 5K, scheduled for May.

This year's Summer Concert Series kicks-off on May 9 at Runde Park, showcasing the Charlotte based band, Charity Case. The concert starts at 6 p.m.
Charity Case is a local not-for-profit band and their stop in Tega Cay is part of their their "Blood, Sweat, and Cheers" farewell tour that runs through June 2009. Final concerts will be at frequented venues in the area along with a few feature performances around the Charlotte region. In their 8 years together the band has raised over $600,000 for Ace & TJ's Grin Kids, a 501 (c) 3 charity for children who are terminally ill and chronically disabled.
Charity Case has performed over 200 shows and began in 2001 as a radio "bit" on the syndicated Ace & TJ Show heard locally on Kiss 95.1 (WNKS-FM). "It has been the most amazing experience and we feel blessed to have touched so many people's lives. We have exceeded all of our dreams, done things many said were impossible." stated Eddie Z, Charity Case guitarist and music director.
"This started out as a radio 'bit' and it has become one of the most incredible experiences imaginable. The band and crew is a special group of people who donate their time to make the dreams of children who are terminally ill and chronically disabled come true. They are the true meaning of charity" said Ace of the Ace & TJ Show, Charity Case lead vocalist.
Each year Ace & TJ's Grin Kids takes a plane load of children who are terminally ill and chronically disabled and their families on a once-in-a-lifetime, all-expenses paid, dream vacation to Disney World. Charity Case has been one of the main sources of funding for Ace & TJ's Grin Kids since its inception.
