TC Parks & Recreation Springs Into Action

This spring Tega Cay Parks & Recreation (TCPR) will once again kick-off a season filled with sports, recreation and this . . . our inagural E-Newsletter.

"As we continue to grow, we recognize the need to stay in touch with the residents, parents, and athletes that are part of our sports leagues and events. In creating a monthly newsletter, we hope to keep the community, not just informed, but more involved," says Charlie Funderburk, Tega Cay Operations Director.

The newsletter will be distributed the first of each month and will provide articles and website links to clubs, organzations, and events that are all part of the Tega Cay Community.  Anyone currently registered through TCPR will automatically be added to the emailing list.  You may unsubscribe by clicking on "SafeUnsubscribe" at the bottom of this page.

We encourage you to forward this newsletter to friends and neighbors.  You can also sign-up to receive the newsletter by clicking the "Join Our . . ." icon located to the left or by visiting our website. If you would like to submit information, please email editor.

Coach Profile: ellieEllie Ciaccia

When you meet Coach Ellie, you immediately know one thing . . . she has a genuine desire to help kid's - on and off the soccer field.

Ellie has been coaching girls soccer in Tega Cay for 2 years.  Last fall, she coached the Championship Team "The Emeralds." Now, with 4 seasons and a Championship under her belt, Ellie is looking forward to her 5th season as a U10 Girls Soccer Coach.

Ask her if she played soccer herself, she laughs and says, "No. I played softball for five years.  I read so much about the game and watched other teams for drills."

Like so many parents, Ellie got involved in soccer because her 10 year old daughter, Kasi Nicol, and 13 year old, Seth Nicol, got into the sport at an early age.  She cut a deal with her daughter, "play on my softball team and I'll coach soccer."

Now Ellie considers the girls on her team as an extended family. "When they are happy. I am happy," says Ellie.   With each passing season, she, the parents, and the players find it difficult to go their separate ways.  "It's like missing family" [after the season ends].

Secrets to her success . . . Ellie incorporates games to keep the girls interest and believes that proper conditioning is key to having a chance to win.
joeyTCPR Profile: Joey Blethen

If you have registered your child for a TCPR sport in the last year and a half, you have at least seen Joey's name in regards to registration, deadlines, game schedules and much much more.  As the Recreation Coordinator, Joey's responsibilities include the development and oversight of the many recreational sports and events that make Tega Cay so very unique.

Joey, who graduated from Winthrop University with a Sports Management degree, began his professional career at Leroy Springs as Co-Athletic Director, running their soccer and basketball program.  One year later Joey was offered the Recreation Coordinator position for the City of Tega Cay.

With four sports seasons under his belt, Joey is as enthusiastic as ever about his job. "I love waking up in the morning and enjoy going into work.  I like having the opportunity to work with so many young people and providing them a great experience.  I look forward to see what the future holds for me and Tega Cay Parks and Rec.," said Joey.

Recent Match Results & Growing the Sport
By Jan Hope

The Tega Cay Croquet Club played their Feb. 2009 matches in brilliant sunshine on the President's Day Holiday!  Nothing deters our avid players, and with the sun taking the chill out of the air, the click of mallet on ball could be heard all over the courts at Lookout Park. Read more

The Croquet Club would like to see the sport continue to grow in the City, as we are expanding our schedule to include a monthly Sunday match for those who are working or at school during our regular monthly Monday matches. Read more
Keeping Our Children Active . . .
ftl brought

Many parents in Tega Cay embrace the importance of creating an active lifestyle for their children. Afterall, we tout ourselves as a community of recreation.  Yet, when we hear about the growing number of children in America that are clinically obese and generally unhealthy, it becomes a concern for everyone.  While competitive sports do provide a wonderful opportunity to keep our kids active, leagues and competitions are not for every child.

As David Klein, Publisher of Charlotte Health and Fitness, explores in a recent issue, competitive sports are not a one size fits all when it comes to physical activity.  I share David's belief that we have lost sight of how important it is to foster simple and fundamental opportunities to run, catch, and jump.  Afterall our children's mental and physical health is the most important "score" to keep in mind.

Excerpt: By David Klein
"Our current hyper-competitive, organized culture offers children very little free time to pick teams and play a game.  An hours long competitive game of hide and seek is a lost art.  Now, everything is orgainzed.  Because of this, unathletic and overweight children are forced to display their ineptitude in front of a host of strangers during recreation league sports.  . . .  Does this over abundance of structured play contribute to the serious problem of overweight children? Yes . . ."
