Message From The President

Dear Friends and Colleagues:                                  IVC President Glenn Roquemore

Where has the summer gone? It seems as if we just said farewell to our graduates at commencement, but my office is already busy planning the program for my opening session for Fall 2012 Flex Week!

I certainly hope to see you all on the first day of our in-service activities, Monday, August 13, in the Performing Arts Center. Chancellor Poertner's very important session is scheduled for the next day, Tuesday, August 14, also in the PAC. Both days feature a no-host networking breakfast at 8 am, followed by my program from 9-11 am on the 13th, and the Chancellor's program from 8:45-11 am on the 14th.

My program features a keynote presentation by Dr. Harold Martin, a combat infantry veteran who fought in Vietnam, served another 20 years, until 2003, in the active Army National Guard and Army Reserves, and received 20 Army awards and decorations. He retired as a counselor from the California State University, and has taught for over 10 years in both the Psychology and Counseling Departments at Pasadena City College.

In 2006, Dr. Martin founded that college's Veteran's Club, and has served as advisor ever since. He began teaching transition courses there for veterans in 2008, and lectures widely on today's returning veterans. His degrees include a PhD from UCLA in Counseling Psychology, with a cognate in Psychiatry. The title of his talk will be "Today's Community College Veteran Student: How To Really Thank Them For Their Service."  I think you will find Dr. Martin's insights both useful and timely--he came highly recommended by our own Dr. Stephen Rochford, who heard him speak at an ASCCC luncheon.

I will conclude with some remarks on the College Completion Agenda/ Student Success Task Force Recommendations.

During his program, Chancellor Poertner will also be presenting on the College Completion Agenda/Student Success Task Force Recommendations and will provide a brief state of the district update. He encourages all faculty and staff to attend as the information pertains to state and national initiatives that directly impact the way we do business and serve students.

Both the Chancellor and I look forward to seeing you during your very busy Flex Week activities.

Feature Story: French-American 2012 Cultural Exchange In Full Swing At Irvine Valley College

IVC Dancers Posing in front of Eiffel Tower 2012IVC dance professor Marie de la Palme recently returned from France and reports that "the summer dance exchange in Paris was a great success." She explains that her "New Choreographic Landscape" is "a cultural and educational exchange project which stems from the aspirations of two schools of dance to promote their programs and develop unique opportunities for intellectual, artistic and personal enrichment."

"Fifteen like-minded dance students, intermediate to advanced, ages 14 to 25, participated in this exchange of choreographic repertoire, meeting French dancers, teachers and choreographers, as well as visiting cultural highlights as they relate to the choreographic culture of each country," explains Marie.

IVC Dancers in France 2012 Marie goes on to say, "The first part of our exchange took place from June 9th til the 25th, with IVC students dancing in Paris...We rehearsed at the Paris Opera School, saw Luc Petton's dancers move with live swans, did an improvisational performance with clowns, craned our necks at the Eiffel Tower, checked out Philippe Descoufle's whimisical repertoire, performed twice, and walked, walked, walked...and, oh yes, we did some shopping too!"

"Now we are hosting our French counterparts," Marie adds, "We hope to give them the time of their lives! They arrived at IVC on Saturday, July 28, and will be rehearsing, visiting and preparing a joint performance in the PAC for Friday, August 10th at 8 pm. Please plan to come and support them and see how both countries contrast and collaborate."

For more information on the French-American Dance Exchange, please contact Professor Marie de la Palme at [email protected] or 949.422.5533. Tickets to the August 10th performance are available at the IVC PAC ticket office or online at www.ivcarts.org.

Front Row Center @ The PAC: Helping Students Review Musical Revues

Theatre instructor Jesse Runde headshotJessica "Jesse" Runde is an adjunct faculty member in the Theatre Arts Department at IVC where she has taught courses in dramatic literature, theatre design, and voice and diction.

Outside the classroom, she has acted, directed and designed for IVC and other Orange County venues for over 10 years. She is a graduate of CSU Long Beach and the University of Oregon. Her master's thesis (an exploration of Buddhist themes in a series of plays by French-Romanian absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco) is published online in "Consciousness, Literature and the Arts," which she highly recommends to anyone looking for a good, pulpy read.

This summer, Jesse is teaching the Theatre Arts Department musical revue course, TA 9. It introduces students to the background and performance practice of the musical revue. The course explores various vocal styles and materials from musical theatre, jazz, and pop-rock literature. Students focus on character analysis, lyric interpretation, and the effective staging of songs in solo and ensemble scenes. The culmination of their hard work was three nights of performances last week titled "Follies Under The Stars," which took place on the Live Oak Terraces on July 25, 26 & 27. Jesse says that if you weren't there you missed a great show!

Making A Difference: Foundation Event Planned To Honor IVC's Veterans

Veterans Angels logoIrvine Valley College Foundation Executive Director Richard Morley announced recently that the annual Irvine Valley College Foundation Dinner will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 here on the IVC campus. There will be a reception at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm and the program to follow will honor the "first flight" of IVC's "Veterans Angels," a newly formed support group who have committed to funding direct educational veterans services, including tutoring, case management, tuition, books, fees and emergency funds.

Veterans Angels donations will also allow the IVC Foundation to build an endowment and the capacity to raise even more money to help our veterans. A Veterans Angels gift enables our veterans to minimize use of their educational benefits for the lower cost of community college education, while leaving maximum veterans benefits available for their more expensive four-year degree completion. Corporate sponsorships for the Veterans Angels project are also being solicited.

For more information on the Annual Foundation Dinner or the Veterans Angels support group, please contact Richard Morley at 949.451.5472 or [email protected].

Campus Profiles: Meet The People Who Are IVC: New VPSS Dr. Linda Fontanilla

IVC VPSS Linda Fontanilla headshotI am very pleased to introduce you to Dr. Linda Fontanilla, who will begin her first day as Irvine Valley College's Vice President of Student Services on August 13, 2012. I encourage you to attend my opening session during Fall 2012 Flex Week where you will have an opportunity to meet our new Vice President.

Linda started her professional career as an air traffic controller with both the United States Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). After almost 15 years as a controller, she went back to school as a single parent and earned a master's degree in Organizational Behavior and a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.

While completing her education, Linda worked as a social services administrator before moving into higher education. She spent many years as the Campus Director of San Joaquin Valley College, Dean of Student Services at College of the Sequoias, and Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services at Cuesta College. Says Linda, "My varied and unique careers have given me great life experiences in preparing me to serve students, under-represented staff and students, and to work with individuals from all walks of life."

Linda is married with one son. Her husband is the architect for In n Out Burgers and her son is an engineer with the Visalia Fire Department, but will soon transfer to the Long Beach Fire Department. During the week Linda and her husband reside in San Dimas, but return often to Visalia where they maintain their home of 25 years and can check in on Linda's 91 year-old mother-in-law.

Says Linda, "Education and helping others understand the importance of valuing other's differences are two cornerstones of my life. I am a certified diversity trainer and have spent much of my professional career working with organizations in the San Joaquin Valley. Because of the very diverse population we serve it is imperative for California community college administrators to be open-minded and keenly aware of those whom we serve."

"I am extremely humbled and honored to have been selected for the position of Vice President of Student Services at Irvine Valley College. Each day I grow even more excited about coming to work at IVC. I am anxious to meet my co-workers and begin the work of serving students. My professional philosophy is 'Students are our business, therefore students come first.' I plan to demonstrate this throughout my career at IVC."

As for top priorities and future plans? Linda explains, "My top three priorities will be: 1. To get to know the students, staff and faculty at IVC. I want to understand the culture of the organization so that I can become an effective and productive member of our college. 2. To ensure that the Student Services programs are ready and positioned to make the necessary changes as required by the Student Success Task Force recommendations. 3. To ensure that programs are funded, stable and prepared to serve students to the fullest extent possible."

Linda concludes by saying, " Over the next three to five years I would like to see all student services programs be in a position to fully support the District's goals, our institutional goals and strategic objectives, while giving every student at IVC an opportunity for access and success. Our student services programs will work in concert with the rest of the college and on a daily basis to prepare for accreditation while striving to meet the standards."

Let's give Linda a warm IVC welcome and be sure to introduce yourself to her during Flex Week.

Campus Spotlight: IVC Coach Tom Pestolesi Helps Mine Pan Am Gold

IVC Coach Tom Pestolesi headshotIrvine Valley Director of Volleyball and women's head coach Tom Pestolesi had a successful trip to Mexico earlier this month with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team. Pestolesi, who served as an assistant coach for the squad, watched his USA team rally from two sets down and 9-7 in the fifth set to defeat Brazil 28-30, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21,15-11 in the Pan American Cup gold-medal match in Juarez, Mexico.

Team USA won its first Pan American Cup gold medal since 2003, which was followed in 2004 by the silver. Brazil was going for its fourth Pan Am Cup title, but settled for its third silver medal. "It was only the second time in the 11-year history of this tourney that the USA has won it," said Coach Pestolesi. "Kristen Richards (from Stamford) was the MVP. It was a great trip. Juarez was great. Great fans, a sold out arena, drums banging, noise makers, crazy fans, awesome atmosphere!"

The United States team, which won its pool to open the tournament, also had a solid win in the semi-finals, defeating the Dominican Republic in four sets. "Coach Reed Sunahara did a great job, as did the entire staff," added Coach Pestolesi. "I am super stoked for the kids."

Prior to the Pan Am competition, the US team did some training at Irvine Valley. "The mantra is train at IVC and win a gold medal," explains Tom. "It has worked for the USA men's team at the 2008 Olympics, the USA men's team at the World League in 2008, Irvine Valley's men's teams in 2007,2008,2011 (state championships), the US women's team in the Grand Prix 2010, 2011 and 2012, and now the US women's team at the Pan Am Cup in 2012. The Ohio State men's team who won the NCAA Championship in 2011 were also here."
