The Power of Positive Love
the 5-to-1 ratio
Recently, I started taking a parenting class. I have been learning how my children learn and think, how they naturally try to manipulate
me and my husband and any situations for their benefit, and (one of the main reasons I am taking this course) how to get them to comply. The facilitator of the class taught us a concept developed by a couples/marriage researcher, called the "5-to-1 ratio." In light of Valentine's day, I thought how befitting. Here's how it works.
John Gottman, the researcher, found that all couples fight. So his recommendation is to accentuate the positive, and minimize, but don't eliminate, the negative.
His research proved that stable, happy couples have a 5:1 ratio between positive interactions and negative interactions. Simply put, for every criticism and negative comment there has to be at least 5 compliments and positive comments.
These positive interactions cause our significant others, our children, friends and even our co-workers to build up what Gottman calls "the reservoir of positive feeling". This reservoir of positive feeling operates just like a savings account into which you are making regular deposits to be withdrawn when individuals are being criticized. When our loved ones have positive feeling stored up they can make a withdrawal to offset their hurt feelings so that things balance out.
How would you rate the ratio of positive and negative interactions in your relationships? Do you have at least a 5:1? You might want to take a hard look. Pass this on, show someone the power of positive love!
