The Herbal Stable
Greetings!

forming fruit The Herbal Stable is "non-toxic" on so many levels - avoiding chemical pesticides; avoiding medicines that suppress without support; using simple, natural nutrition and never training or handling animals in the toxic ways of anger or demoralizing to achieve a goal. Here is our Herb of the Month:

Pomegranate:
Punica granatum

Pomegranate is a fruit bearing shrub from the Himalayas - its juice covered seeds were dried and crushed into a powder in Tibet. This medicinal powder was used to aid digestion and support the health of most organs including the heart, lungs and kidneys.

The juicy seeds can be fed to horses to add anti-oxidants, support digestion and strengthen the kidneys. The large, red, round fruits become available in markets in late summer and fall. The thick hull-like skin should be peeled away after sectioning the fruit (be aware, the juice will stain!).  Add new foods gradually to the horse's diet. Build up to no more than 2 large fruits a day and offer them every other day. They are rich in nutrients.

Here in the mountains of New Mexico, we grow the bushes and it is common to harvest many dozens of fruits from a small, well watered bush. The blossoms attract hummingbirds and bees.  The little tree itself is just lovely.

The FDA has not approved any of these statements.

We believe food is our medicine and that good health is the natural condition. Nourish your horse's body so its innate ability to heal itself remains strong and intact.

The Herbal Dog

Pumpkin - Cucurbita pepo
Pumpkins are nourishing and healing. The flesh is used (canned, pure pumpkin without spices or puree made at home from cooked flesh) to regulate the bowels of  dogs.  Adding a quarter cup for very large dogs, two tablespoons for medium size and one tablespoon for small dogs to each feeding will balance the digestive system, relieving constipation or diarrhea.

Pumpkin flesh is full of beta-carotene and enzymes. The enzymes that fresh, raw foods provide are essential to the health of all species. Enzymes are used by the body for digestion, joint health, brain function and detoxification.

Phytotherapy (healing with plants) brings the complete healing package of the plant's constituents to our animals rather than a simple chemical synthesized from the original composition. The complete plant often contains properties that prevent the side effects so common with the single element pulled from its natural state. The simple plant with all of its properties, as an herb, an essential oil or a flower essence offers balancing of our bodies because of its innate balance!

Whenever possible, native species will contain more appropriate elements for herbal healing because they contain the energy of where we live!

We hope your days and nights are filled with balance and the scents of Nature!
