Wood Betony is an herb used to calm people while supporting the central nervous system. For horses, it was traditionally used for glandular disorders, to support the spleen and digestion and for arthritis. It was added to a bucket feed or mash using only the aerial parts - above ground.
Wood Betony is full of calcium with potassium and magnesium in smaller amounts. These minerals nourish the nerves, joints and the muscles of the digestive tract.
It can be brewed into a tea for the horse (I have used the tea myself to relax when under stress) that is poured over a bucket feed or offered alone in a bucket to drink. As with any unfamiliar herb; offer a small amount at first and watch for any adverse reaction (if this occurs, do not give any more of the herb!) because all animals are unique and have varying metabolisms.
There are three ways of addressing dis-ease:
- The Scientific Tradition uses chemistry to alleviate symptoms.
- The Heroic Tradition uses herbs in a similar way to address the disorder according to the herbal effects.
- The Wisdom Way nourishes the body to support its own innate healing.
There is a place for each of these Traditions in healing.
We maintain an herbal stable yard - basing our equine rations and care upon the simplicity of Nature and our belief that good health is the natural condition and we nourish it with all we do. Bodies know how to heal. We work hard to support the systems that make healing possible.
We adore horses!
