Herb of the Week
Silica: Diatomaceous Earth / Silicea / Silicon Dioxide
Greetings!

Silica
is as important to our bone, joint, hair, nail (hoof!) and skin structures as all the other minerals! It combines with the minerals from our diet to "glue" the "fabric" of our bodies together. There are herbs that are full of silica. Horsetail is a very good one for humans in capsule form or brewed as an infusion. Horsetail is a potential allergen for horses, so we recommend feeding DE (diatomaceous earth) to horses to support the hair, skin, bone and hoof health. Another property of DE is its ability to destroy parasites and insects by shredding their outer bodies. The diatomes that lived in ancient sea beds are the source of DE and their shard-like petrified bodies are supremely irritating. That is why you must not breathe the DE powder, nor get it into your eyes! It will irritate them (cut them) and harm the lungs. To feed the DE (horses, dogs or humans) as a powder, mix it gently into the dry food, then add water to suppress the dustiness. For dogs and people, silica or DE capsules can be taken according the directions on the bottle (large dogs would receive a child's dose; small dogs, half the child's dose). Daily equine supplementation of DE would be 1 tablespoon. As a dewormer it is fed to a horse one quarter cup (a very large horse gets 1/2 cup) of the powder daily for 10 to 20 days depending upon the possible infestation.

Silicea is a cell salt (one of the 12 Schuessler cell salts that are the constituents of all of our organs) that is made from flint and used by Homeopaths to treat skin conditions (acne, boils, abcesses, etc.), to remove imbedded objects, restore hair, treat debility and support hoof structures (during laminitis, etc.). Slicea comes in pellets/pills (most common) or in a liquid. They are homeopathic remedies, dosed under the tongue for people; placed into bland food (strong scents or flavors will nullify homeopathics) or water for animals. The remedy will have a dosage recommended for humans - it is an appropriate dose for any animal as well because it is a medicine based upon energy. (for more information on these remedies for dogs: The Holistic Dog Care Handbook - for horses: The Holistic Horse Care Handbook from the Naturalpaths Store)... Silicea is in "Bioplasma", a remedy that is wonderful to restore the body during and after illness or injury.

Silicon Dioxide (Quartz) is used as a benign bulking agent in making medicinal tablets in allopathy. As a powder, it is used to stop bleeding from wounds. Quartz is used in optics, radio, precision instruments, glassmaking and electronic silicon chips - it is the most common mineral on Earth and the most useful. All of our technology depends upon Quartz crystals (just as it once depended entirely upon horses!).
