 Herb of the Week
Papaya - Carica papaya
Greetings!

We are back!!   With faster Internet service (dial up didn't allow us to create our email newsletters or update the websites) and a new location, we invite you to visit our newly designed site www.naturalpaths.org and blog http://dharmahorse.blogspot.com/ . There is a schedule of workshops and clinics here at Flying Horse Farm on the Naturalpaths site home page.

Our Herb of the Week is Papaya, a melon like tropical fruit that contains an enzyme (papain) to digest protein. This property actually dissolves proteins in dead tissue, making papaya juice, dried extracts and powder a good compound for use on proud flesh and to remove dead skin. Ingested, the fruit acts as a remedy for indigestion, heartburn and as a remarkable healers of ulcers in humans and horses.

When I experience indigestion/heartburn, instead of using antacids or baking soda (which change the pH of the gut!), I eat dried papaya or chew the tablets. If we constantly subdue the hydrochloric acid in the stomach that is the way the stomach digests food - we will eventually damage that mechanism. To AID the digestive process brings relief!

Combined with Aloe Vera juice, Papaya juice can be dosed to horses orally twice a day - two ounces (60cc's) up to 4 times daily. Mix the juices in equal amounts just before dosing.

Papaya is given to people for stomach inflammation (gastritis) in tablet form to chew. The fruit is a health enhancing addition to salads, yogurt, with big meals (to aid digestion) and is used to help expel worms! Papaya is often used in "meat tenderizers" for its ability to break down proteins - some horse persons have used the tenderizer on proud flesh with success.

Remember, we create our bodies with the foods we ingest!
We create our horses' bodies with what we feed to them!
