Herb of the Week
Asparagus - Asparagus officinalis
Greetings!
Asparagus is a nourishing vegetable that is also a healing herb in Phytotherapy (healing with plants). The shoots (called "sprue") contain Asparagin which is a unique crystalline medicine that clears and supports the entire renal system of all animals and people.

Horses, cattle and camelids seek out and devour the plants that grow along ditchbanks and near waterways. The roots have medicinal properties as well (for bladder and kidneys). To use the root destroys the plant, of course, so we recommend snapping or cutting the shoots for use. To feed as a remedy for equine bladder or kidney wasting, pain, infection or obstruction - give large animals one handful of raw shoots twice a day for 10 days.

Dogs love steamed Asparagus. You can mash it well after cooking and feed mixed into the ration or on its own to support the system. I give a large dog 1/4 cup twice a day / medium dog one tablespoon twice daily / a small dog one teaspoon twice a day; for 10 days. My dogs actually like their asparagus raw and fed without cooking, it retains the healing enzymes.

When there were recalls of tainted dog foods and many canines were dying from renal failure (caused by the toxins) - I put out the asparagus information through several sites and heard many dogs recovered that perhaps could have died without the asparagus detox.

People will find this delicious healer effective cooked or raw and it makes a great addition to meals 2 or 3 times a week just for nourishment. In times of renal distress - bladder infections, kidney stones, weak urination, burning or pain with urination, etc. - the shoots should be eaten 2 to 3 times daily for 10 days. For children use 4 shoots per dose, for adults use 6 to 10 depending upon weight. This will support and cleanse the system to aid healing.

You can use canned or frozen shoots. Try to use low salt canned asparagus. I keep a few cans handy just in case (also cranberry juice - another profound renal cleanser and detoxifier of the entire body), while fresh is best - if I need it quickly, the market could be out!

Asparagus also supports joints and aids healing of all infections by relieving the endocrine system, allowing the flow of lymph through the lymphatic system that is a part of all bodies' filtering mechanisms: Liver/Kidneys/Glands - Asparagus is effective support in the healing of jaundice.
