Herb of the Week
Papaya - Carica papaya
Greetings!
The fruit of the Papaya is used for digestive health - to maintain it and to return to it! Full of enzymes (papain), vitamins and minerals, the delicious Papaya can heal ulcers when fed to humans and horses. You can purchase the fruit fresh, dried or canned and its properties are intact in all 3 forms. It is used for diarrhea, to soothe the intestinal tract, for protein digestion and as a blood cleanser.

The juice squeezed from the fruit can be used on wounds and is very effective to prevent and to control "proud flesh". This is a condition where the granulation of tissue as a wound heals is happening faster at the interior than the healing of the skin to cover the wound!

I keep dried Papaya Fruit strips (or chewable tablets) to eat at night if I wake up with "heartburn". Instead of drinking some bicarbonate of soda in water (which does relieve the burning, but compromises the hydrochloric/digesting acids of the stomach), I just chew on the papaya, drink a bit of water and fall back to sleep.

Horses are very susceptible to the development of ulcers. Stress is the usual cause along with an unnatural diet of grains and their by-products. Signs of an ulcer can range from regular colic episodes to bucking when ridden or just refusing to move. Horses respond to pain in a variety of ways and ulcers are very painful. Papaya does not just cover up the symptoms, it can actually heal the ulceration - but, the causes of the stress and imbalance must be addressed!

The blood cleansing properties of papaya also lend it to helping with allergies.

Dogs with digestive disorders usually respond best to the addition of pure pumpkin in their diet - canned, without the milk and spices for pie! Cats respond well to added Colostrum powder in their food. If you suspect infection or parasites in any being's digestive tract, Papaya can help (Colloidal silver and goldenseal are also good choices, but consult with your holistic health practitioner on these).
