Herb of the Week
Slippery Elm Bark - Ulmus fulva
Greetings!
The inner bark of Slippery Elm is used to heal diarrhea in people, horses, dogs, even cats. It will soothe inflamed tissues. A decoction will heal a sore throat, calm irritated skin and rashes, cool and relieve hemorrhoids (externally and by drinking the liquid) and help heal tumors both internal and external.

Slippery Elm is a premiere ulcer remedy, is high in protein and the B-complex vitamins and has small amounts of magnesium (the miraculous mineral for heart, lung, muscle, nerve and brain health).

It has been used for Asthma; Diarrhea and Constipation both (!); Renal Problems, Coughs and even Tuberculosis/Appendicitis/Pneumonia/Whooping Cough, some very serious conditions.

For horses, it can be fed powdered in a really wet mash to heal the digestive tract, lungs and kidneys/bladder. One quarter cup daily for 10 days can have remarkable results. For dogs, a teaspoon, up to one heaping tablespoon of the powdered bark added to soaked food once daily for 7 days is a common dose. Cats can have 1/2 to a full teaspoon if quite large, fed once a day for a week. You can simmer the bark for 20 minutes and feed the decoction to the animals. This liquid is best for humans, drink a cup full twice daily for 3 to 7 days.

Slippery Elm is used to make herbal tablets: equal amounts of the Slippery Elm powder and powdered herb are very lightly moistened with vegetable glycerin, rolled out into "ropes", cut into tablets and left to dry. This is very effective. The powder can also be packed into capsules.
