Turmeric is a healer of inflammation, digestion and is a blood purifier. It is the root - or rhizome that is used. It is used in Curry (such a healthy addition to food!) and is taken in capsules to reduce pain from inflammation and arthritis; to normalize blood sugar levels; to relieve coughing and asthma; is anti-bacterial and anti-tumor!
I have fed Turmeric to horses with arthritis and to a gelding with melanomas. It was helpful in all these cases and I feel it improved and prolonged the high quality lives of my equine friends. It can be fed to horses with insulin imbalances as well and an equine dose ranges from 1 to 2 tablespoons (1/3 to 2/3 ounce) of the powdered (ground) herb twice daily.
Humans take 2 to 4 capsules after a meal to aid blood sugar normalization. Taken at bedtime, it can help reduce pain and detox the liver and gallbladder. Human use for tumor reduction has been practiced for centuries.
For dogs, a pinch in the food for little ones, up to a half teaspoon for a large dog is the usual dose.
You can make Turmeric paste to apply to bruises and swellings by mixing a handful of herb with a teaspoon of sea salt. Add water or milk until it forms a stiff paste to apply to the injury.
Turmeric helps with the pain of chronic joint injuries, back pain, muscle tearing or bruising and helps support the liver (as most every yellow herb does).
