This week I want to share with you an Herbal Combination for dogs. The dog in nature does eat plants - not only will he chew on grasses and herbs, but will eat the contents from the digestive tract of a "kill". Now, if he caught a rabbit for supper, the rabbit will have herbs and grasses in various stages of digestion that will become nourishment for the dog as well.
The properties of plants are vital to the good health of your dog and a combination that we use regularly, added to the dog's food (with a little water to connect it) is:
Equal parts powdered (ground) Thyme, powdered Parsley and Burdock Root powder.
The Thyme is a digestive aid and "conditions" the digestive tract. It is a systemic anti-parasite remedy - thymol, the volatile oil in thyme, is anti-heartworm. Parsley cleanses and tones the renal system (bladder and kidneys) and strengthens the heart. Burdock supports and heals the liver, cleanses the endocrine system, balancing glands and hormones.
This supplement can be fed for up to 6 months at a time with a break of about 45 days to let the body regulate itself. A dog over 100 lbs. would get 3 teaspoons daily; 80lbs to 100 lbs. would get 2 tsps. daily; 40 lbs. to 80lbs. would get 1 tsp. daily and under 40lbs. would receive 1/2 tsp. daily (a really little mini-dog, give just a pinch).
This information has not been reviewed by the FDA. For pregnant or ill animals, consult a health care practitioner.
The herbs in this combination are easy to find at a health food store and can be mixed well, kept in an airtight container in a cool dry place and used with dry, canned or raw foods.
