February 16th Herb of the Week:
PEPPERMINT - Mentha spp./M. Piperita
Greetings!
Peppermint relaxes the the muscles of the digestive tract and stimulates bile production so it is a great choice for indigestion, flatulence, colic and nausea. The volatile oils in peppermint contain menthol, so it can be a profound pain reliever and decongestant. Peppermint leaves are used in infusions (teas) and can be made into a tincture, used in liniments, vaporizers or infused into oils like grapeseed (do not use any grape products for dogs - it can damage their kidneys - no raisins, etc.). Mint can stimulate the liver and the uterus, so it is contraindicated for pregnancy. It is too strong for babies of any species (use spearmint, it is milder).

Essential oil of peppermint is very cooling. Try it in a spray bottle: one pint water with 20 drops oil, for a cooling skin spray in the Summer. If you use strong green tea instead of plain water, it will also be a safe sunscreen spray.

The scent or flavor of Peppermint will antidote (nullify) homeopathic medicines, so wait an hour before or after its use to dose the medicine.
