February 9th 2009 Herb of the Week

Hawthorn Berry
Greetings!

Our herb of the week is heart healthy Hawthorn; Crataegus oxycantha.
Hawthorn Berry is an adaptogen, an herb that equalizes or balances the system it works upon. It resonates with the heart and circulatory system, being able to lower or raise blood pressure to normal levels. It strengthens blood vessels, dilates them, regulates heart beat, helps digest fats, improves the heart's pumping action, improves local circulation and is used for angina.

Hawthorn Berry syrup, decoctions, capsules and tinctures can be found in health food stores.

Hawthorn berry capsules daily stopped the breaking of blood vessels in my Mother's eyes. A friend lowered his very high blood pressure with an herbal combination based on Hawthorn Berry. Another friend controls his heart rhythm with Hawthorn. I know a horse whose heart murmur was eased by it.

Herbs should not be mixed with pharmaceuticals without the advise of a Practitioner. Many herbs like Hawthorn can replace the chemicals that come with side effects. A Health Care Practitioner/Professional can make that transition safely. The statements about Hawthorn have not been evaluated by the FDA.
