Natural Paths  THE HERB OF THE WEEK: CHAMOMILE 01/05/09
Greetings!

CHAMOMILE is our herb of the week. It is "Roman" (Chamaemelum Nobile) or "German" (Matricaria Recutita). If you have ragweed allergies, Chamomile will probably irritate you because it is related. If you are pregnant or have pregnant animals, avoid Chamomile, it is a uterine stimulant.
If you just need to relax, Chamomile tea can be your cup of choice.
We hope you enjoy the following information on using this gentle herb in the natural care of your animals and yourself.

Sincerely,

Katharine Chrisley

GENTLE CHAMOMILENatural Path

It has feathery leaves and white, daisy-like flowers. It is known as a blood cleanser and pain reliever. It is used as a tea (infusion) or homeopathically for teething children, sore gums and as a poultice to remove splinters, slivers, stickers (it was said to pull out bullets!) and embedded objects. I just tape a soaked (in warm water) Chamomile tea bag over the object before going to bed at night.

It is an important ingredient in our remedy for tumors (recipe is in the Holistic Horse Care Manual and in "The Well-Being of Pets and Companions" - www.naturalpaths.org ) and is used in hair rinses to heal the scalp. The tea aids indigestion, irritable bowel and anxiety. Essential oil of Chamomile is expensive, bright blue (it contains azulenes) and is used for stress, eczema, even asthma.

Chamomile can cause contact dermatitis in those prone to reactions and skin allergies. Remember, it is a uterine stimulant, so it can bring on menses, so it is contraindicated for pregnancy!

Chamomile Flower Essence is used for one who is irritable and moody.

It is fed to HORSES to calm them: one small handful of blossoms in the feed per day. The tea can be rubbed on the sore gums of DOGS.
