Mark your calendar for the opening of Virginia Beach's newest recreation center, skate park and park! The ribbon cutting ceremony for Williams Farm Community Recreation Center and Park will be held at 4 pm on Friday, October 26. The recreation center and park are located off Newtown Road, between Diamond Spring and Newtown Elementary Schools. The recreation center is a 71,000 square foot innovative facility like none other in Virginia Beach. The large, indoor pool features a water playground, 156-foot curving slide, rock climbing wall, current channel, and an outdoor sprayground. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the spacious cardio, free weight and fitness class areas, as well as the indoor track which overlooks the pool and gym. Other features include an outdoor play court, a multimedia area for teens, classrooms for our preschool programs, and meeting rooms. Check out some photos of the construction progress. You've never seen a recreation center like this before!
The 25,000 square-foot skate park is adjacent to the new recreation center and features urban street plaza elements like steps and rails, a concrete bowl and flow park. This will be the City's third public skate park. Look for more detailed information on the recreation center, park and skate park in upcoming newsletters and on our website at www.VBgov.com/Parks. |
Youth Boxing Helps Kids with Fitness & More
Physical fitness is one of the most important tools in youth development, not just physically, but also mentally. Working out helps build discipline and self confidence and it contributes to a healthy heart and bones. Currently there are approximately nine million children over the age of six that are obese. Childhood obesity can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, pre-diabetes and bone or joint problems. With the obesity rates raising in youth, it is important that we give children the tools they will need to live a healthy life.
We offer Amateur Youth Boxing at Kempsville and will soon offer it at Williams Farm Recreation Center as well. In these programs, we instruct our participants on the basics of the sport of boxing with hands on training with USA Amateur Boxing Coaches. Not only will kids learn to box and gain focus and discipline, but they will also be put through rigorous fitness routines to help get them up to the fitness level needed to participate in such a physically demanding sport. Our instructors will work with the kids on cardiovascular fitness, full body strength, foot work, coordination, speed and agility.
Our youth boxing classes are open to all levels of fitness and experience. Coed classes are offered at Kempsville for youth ages 8-16, while Williams Farm will offer girls only and boys only classes for ages 11-17 beginning in November. The fee is $49 for 8 classes. Register online now! You can also register in person at any recreation center. |
